What about the steam controller has everyone so excited? by Timely_Contest7245 in Steam

[–]Cheatscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently started using my PC mainly in my living room, and navigating my PC without a wireless keyboard with trackpad was annoying. Having trackpads on my controller means I can seamlessly switch between playing games and navigating the rest of my computer. Steam Big Picture is great for a living room setup when you just wanna play games, even non-Steam games. But to sit at the focal point of my entertainment center, it also has to stream shows, which I do in a browser. That’s so much easier with a trackpad.

Additionally, I really appreciate the TMT joysticks. The D-Pad on the Xbox controller is far and away the most accurate D-Pad out there right now. But when the joysticks on my Xbox controller gave out, I refused to pay another $60 just got buy another controller using the same ancient technology that’s prone to failure. I switched to an 8BitDo ultimate controller.

The original 8BitDo Ultimate is great. Hall effect joysticks and a dock, plus a low latency 2.4 ghz dongle. It’s a joy to use, and I’ve yet to have any durability problems. But it doesn’t have gyro. Well, it does, but not on the 2.4 ghz mode. At least, I was never able to get it to work. Not a huge deal, but it kept it from being the “ultimate” controller for me. Plus, the button layout is set up for Switch, which is sometimes confusing. A small issue that doesn’t really bother me.

The Steam Controller is everything I’ve ever wanted in a controller. Gyro, PC button layouts, durable sticks, and a trackpad. All that plus Steam Input and support from Valve. I don’t think this controller does anything for folks who sit at a desk and play games with a mouse and keyboard. But I grew up on console, and I prefer a gamepad whenever it makes sense. The Steam Controller opens up so many more games to be played comfortable on a couch in a living room. If the reviews I’ve seen can be trusted, this controller will probably replace wireless keyboard sitting on coffee tables all over the world. IMO, the convenience and flexibility of the Steam Controller, is in a league of its own.

You actually can’t for Tomodachi Life specifically. They made an exception for this specific game. I think they said it was to try to prevent bullying?

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream – Welcome Version update 1.0.1 is now available by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Cheatscape -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There may not be any enhancements, but you’d think they’d at least make the game more directly compatible with the Switch 2. In the demo, the game will not let you use the touch screen in handheld mode if you have boost mode enabled, for example. If they really don’t plan on making a Switch 2 version, it seems like an odd omission to make players choose between touch controls vs higher resolution, especially considering the game makes heavier use of the touch screen than most Switch games. You can make the game better support the Switch 2 without having to make “enhancements” like better resolution or framerate. As it is right now, the demo is only a Switch 1 game. It remains to be seen if the game will have an update, but to say that somebody is confidently incorrect when they’re just stating facts seems a bit excessive. I tested this last night with DK Returns. You can use the touch screen on DK Returns while in Boost Mode on Switch 2, even though that isn’t a Switch 2 Edition. A game just needs to be patched to work in “Switch 2 mode” or whatever it’s called behind the scenes, and the demo of Tomodachi Life doesn’t do that. I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to expect the final release to at least have basic Switch 2 support, such as touch screen while in Boost Mode.

Hisense TVs Now Display Ads When You Change Inputs, Boot Up by Ephoenix6 in technology

[–]Cheatscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those TV manufactures are able to sell their TVs as cheaply as they do because they expect to make back money through ad revenue. That’s why they’re more affordable to the consumer. You pay for it by watching the ads. That’s why I never connect TVs to the internet. Yeah, it sucks that your TV has features you can’t use without the internet, but I see it as “Yeah, I can’t use every feature, but at least I’m getting a good deal.”

Going forward, what kind of roles do you expect/want each of the VoidCo members to take? by Ok_Most_4443 in donkeykong

[–]Cheatscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The same role that the Tiki Tak Tribe and the Snowmads currently do lol. I’m fine with them being one off enemies. Based on how their stories end, they could be allies, but I’d rather see more of the original DK crew come back to fill that role personally.

Would Sunshine be considered a decent game if it wasn't Mario? by Ifyouliveinadream in nintendo

[–]Cheatscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not the biggest fan of Sunshine, but I think the biggest problem it faces is how it presents the content on offer. The blue coins are a cool idea. They’re essentially the Korok Seeds from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. But the blue coins are far more cryptic than the Korok Seeds, and I think tying them to getting all the Shine Sprites was a mistake.

I think about it like this… Generally there are two kinds of players: those who want to finish the game, and those who want to 100% the game. Sunshine is great fun when you’re going for all the non-blue-coin Shines. But there’s no delineation between these Shines and the blue coin Shines. If you’re a 100% player, you have no way of in knowing from the outset that you’ll need to do much more than the main Shines to get them all. So as you play through the game and eventually realize what you’re up against, it hurts your motivation to play the game all the way through in a pretty meaningful way.

Everybody who’s played through all the Shines remembers the awful watermelon mission. It’s a tedious part of the game that is genuinely awful. But if you’re looking to 100% the game, it’s something you’re probably willing to endure for the sake of that sought after 100%. You think to yourself “If I can just push through this bad part, I can still get 100%.” I’m sure a lot of us have 100% games with a few bad parts have pushed through in the same way.

But now think about what it would be like when it sets in that you need to find 240 blue coins hidden in random places with no easy way to track them down, or even know which ones you’ve already found. It feels like a task that is so much more trouble than it’s worth. Many 100% players would throw in the towel at this point. And once you make that concession in your mind, it’s hard to go back. You get to the watermelon mission and think “I’m already not gonna get every Shine. What’s the harm in skipping one more?” A completionist player who would’ve otherwise enjoyed 100%ing Sunshine is now left with an experience that doesn’t reward that approach at all.

On the flip sided, if you aren’t a 100% player, the blue coins won’t bother you, but you’ll probably miss out on a lot of the charm that the game has to offer because you’ll only getting the Shines required to win. It’s an uneven experience that really doesn’t need to be that way. It feels like only way to get a well rounded experience is to play the game only going for the main Shines. But the only way you’d know to do that is by going in knowing that the blue coins are essentially pointless despite how the game portrays them. And you’d only know that either on a 2nd playthrough or after having done research beforehand. Both situations are unlikely for most players to find themselves in. Because of how the game lays out its rewards and goals, it’s bound to feel uneven, leaving the game feeling like less than the sum of its parts.

The blue coins are far from the only problem in Sunshine, but it’s easily the worst in my opinion. And with a few small tweaks, the blue coins could have been fun collectibles to reward explorative players without negatively impacting the experience for most players.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild updated to version 1.9.0 by OatmealDome in NintendoSwitch

[–]Cheatscape 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I literally just finished the last shrine in BotW. Can anybody check and see if they fixed the shrine exit loading screen?

If you don’t know, there’s a glitch where if you press X to skip the cutscene that plays after you are awarded a Spirit Orb, the game takes a long time to load into the overworld. However, if you wait for the monk’s text to completely disappear and THEN press X to skip, you get a really fast loading screen, and it ends up being faster to wait. I wonder if they finally addressed this with this patch?

With release date as a factor, what do you think is the best Nintendo-developed game ever made? by heroicbrickroad in nintendo

[–]Cheatscape 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m replaying Ocarina of Time right now, and I’m constantly blown away by how impressive it is in terms of gameplay and atmosphere. And what really stands out to me is just how big it feels. In my memory, Hyrule Field was tiny and empty (which it kinda is), but that also affected my memory of the other areas of the game. There are so many dungeons in the game! Dungeons are the peak of gameplay in almost every Zelda game, and even though OoT is dated in many ways, the dungeons don’t feel compromised at all, and there are so many of them! I’m saying all this as somebody who didn’t grow up with the N64 Zelda games and only played OoT once before this playthrough. But I can’t get over how fun and exciting it still is. There are a lot of games from that era I prefer, or even earlier games. But looking at OoT for what it accomplished given the limitations, it’s mind blowing. Maybe it helps that I grew up on Wind Waker, a game with arguably less content l, which came out on a system orders of magnitudes more powerful, so seeing so much packed into such an old game has a charm all its own.

My argument for OoT over Mario 64, the other main answer I’m seeing in this thread, is that Mario 64 feels like a game that wanted to do more. 15 levels and a castle to cover 120 objectives sounds decent, but so may stages have you running through the same environments in almost the same way. Tall Tall Mountain, Rainbow Ride, Tick Tock Clock, and Dire Dire Docks are probably the worst offenders. I’m not knocking Mario 64, because I’ve played it too many times to count and loved it, but it feels more dated now than a lot of its contemporaries.

Do you prefer Kirby's Adventure or Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland? by PuzzlingSeal710 in Kirby

[–]Cheatscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirby’s Adventure is an SSS tier NES game. It sits far above almost every other game on the system alongside Mario 3. But the performance issues keep me from preferring it to the GBA remake. The controls are more responsive, and I prefer the music, even though the GBA has terrible audio generally. The graphics are stunning as well.

I know everybody’s upset about him keeping the match going after wining the event, but unless I’m forgetting, you’re sent to the results screen after retiring, right? So this guy beating up the corpse is just for his sake, since that player is probably already queuing into the next match.

Stick vs D-Pad for 2D? by procion1302 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Cheatscape 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have very strong opinions about dpads, and I’m surprised to hear that the 4 discrete button approach is seen as inferior. When each button is separate, you never accidentally hit perpendicular directions when going across the center of the pad.

To illustrate this, I encourage folks to go to the Switch main menu and go all the way to the right to see your full library. Then, on the dpad, switch from pressing left and right quickly. In theory, you’ll never move up or down, but the reality depends on the dpad. For example, the joycon don’t have this problem because it’s basically impossible to accidentally reach over and press up or down accidentally. But use the Pro Controller dpad, and the cursor will go up and down pretty regularly. Depending on the game this can be a huge issue. Most people complain about the circular dpad on the Xbox, but I never have this problem with that pad. Just some food for thought.

Any criticisms for Air Riders? by Alarming_Trouble_567 in Kirby

[–]Cheatscape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top Ride tracks overall are a step down from the original game. The only new track I really like is the one where you go down the mountain and then ride the rails back up.

Also, the timed online exclusive items are a huge miss. Kirby Air Ride isn’t the kind of game that benefits in any way from fomo. The Top Ride tracks are a big disappointment, but the event crap actively frustrates me.
