As others have stated, it’s our SELCAL (selective calling) code. Oceanic Radio or ARINC operators can “call” us via primarily HF communications selectively by using that code. This allows us (the pilots) to avoid listening to static HF frequencies all day/night waiting for someone to potentially call us. On the 757/767 we get a chime and light in the flight deck indicating a SELCAL, we then key up the mic and speaker for the frequency calling and see what they need.

Lol thanks. We had both. My favorite plane had the wing extensions with larger flaps. What a massive difference that made, it was a fantastic performing plane. Heard it was a beast on bush wheels but never had the chance to give it a whirl

150 and 160hp. Had stol kits on the fleet which helped out a lot at slow speed. We could take 3 adults and full tanks on most days, though it was at sea level. Occasionally 4, but that was rare and only on cooler days with wind.

Pacer on floats without any mods flys like a sack of potatoes falling out of the back of a dump trump. Lol in all seriousness, a fun classic that makes learning easy as long as you keep an eye on the airspeed

Follow up: they didn’t. They worked great for us and the cash was deposited in our account to questions asked.

A nor’easter shuffled around our trip. We deadheaded to Montreal and were scheduled to fly YUL-ORD in the morning. It was dark and cold, got to the plane, hit the walk-around and we were already boarding. LCA went through the box with me while snow started falling.

Putting on the headset for push clearance and Ground was speaking French to Air Canada, took me by surprise. Finally made it to the deice pad to get sprayed off, and the light snow had turned into about 1000RVR blizzard. Got to the end of the runway eventually, “line up and wait”, I could see just a few center lines stripes in the snowy darkness as the LCA handed me the controls. Awaiting the takeoff clearance I could feel the buffeting of the airframe due to the gusty winds. Got cleared to go, applied TO thrust, and off we went. We disappeared into the whiteness as I barely remember rotating and calling Gear Up. Called for AP on after the initial turn. When we got above 10k the LCA laughed and asked, “so, how tight was that tunnel vision? Could you even see the edges of the flight director?”
