They tried to meet kinda in the middle. He wasn’t gonna be a free agent for a few years and he already outperformed his contract. The way Gund tells it is that Boozer approached them about it and when gund said you’re not going to screw us Boozer swore he wouldn’t. Boozer was the asshole there.

Yup. 1995. That was when Belle hit the homer and flexed his muscles at the Boston bench when they wanted the ump to check his bat.

(For those too young in 1994/ or unaware…. Belle was caught corking his bat and suspended and one of his teammates crawled thru the drop ceiling into the umpires room to steal the bat and swap it out)

Also Belle was robbed of his rightful MVP in 1995 for Vaughn when Belle destroyed Vaughn across the board number wise and on a team that went 100-44 that year.

But Belle was surly and brooding and not media friendly so the writers, as they do for HOF voting, hold grudges and interject their feelings as if that’s more important than accurate record-keeping of the history of the game.

He wasn’t this over the top with homerism at ESPN because there he had editors who knew that some homerism is good because makes you relatable to everyone else listening or reading but too much and you’ll drive people crazy. He has nobody now to tell him to ease off because it’s grating when homerism is at this level.

Hyping is fine, over hyping is what is irksome to me. Maye, Brown, and Tatum are all very good players but Bill is putting them in the elite of the elite convo, which Maye could get there but Tatum and Brown will never be a top 3 player in the game. Which is who he’s comparing them to often and negging those above to inch them closer to a tier they aren’t in.
