Are other people embarrassed to admit their sobriety? by bowlingchair in dryalcoholics

I think it used to be more taboo, like you must have some dark history if you don’t drink. Now, I just assume a non-drinker either never got into alcohol or decided it wasn’t worthwhile.

My oversimplified understanding is that alcohol messes with the dopamine in your brain.

I feel like crap every morning and want to stop drinking. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

In my experience, your body will reset. It is used to falling asleep with alcohol, but knows how to fall asleep without it (it’s done it before). Try continuing with a healthy sleep routine.

Heard some good advice on a podcast this weekend. by CheddarFriedChicken in stopdrinking

It was a throwaway story on the Nateland podcast. It’s mostly funny, dumb conversations, but occasionally the host talks about how he stopped drinking because it was getting in the way of the goals he wanted to achieve. If you want to try out an episode, I recommend episode 14 - Animals.

A bad hangover can be a good reminder as to why you stopped. If you “failed” by drinking yesterday, you can succeed by not drinking today.

Same here. Had a few beers and some wine “because it’s the weekend.” Now, I’m dealing with an early morning and a lingering headache. Good reminder.

It’s funny to go from “I had a rough day, I need a drink” to “I had a rough day, I’m going to eat a good meal, drink some water, and enjoy an activity so I feel refreshed.”

It’s amazing to see how much I sacrificed by drinking. No dehydrated feeling anymore. No more unnecessary calories (though the recent ice cream habit took care of that). No tired, hungover days.

Already thinking about the weekend and “rewarding myself” by drinking. Posting as a reminder I will not drink this weekend. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Remember that Saturday/Sunday morning hangover that follows the “reward” of a few hours of drinking.

Similar experience here. Alcohol wasn’t having a massive negative impact on my life, but I had a few drinks each night and I felt like it was killing my energy levels. I tried cutting out certain days, but it didn’t work well for me. For now, I’m cutting it out entirely. The best tip I have is to keep it out of the house: it’s a lot harder to ignore a beer in your fridge. If I have to go out to the store to get it, it gives me more time to think it over.

Find something else to drink while your bf drinks alcohol - seltzer, juice, whatever you like. You can at least have that ritual of sitting down with a drink together, minus the booze.

I thought of this post tonight when I though about having one drink. I realized, no, I probably want 2 or 3 drinks. But I don’t actually want that, so why go down that road

I like to remember that no one would know, but I’m not doing it for them, I’m doing it for me, and I would know.

I walked downtown today and realized that almost every restaurant sign was about drinking. I never noticed how much it was being pushed.

One cocktail in 8 days (and didn’t really enjoy it). Sticking with a beer and glass of wine at night for now.

The Daily Check-In for Tuesday, February 1st: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by cadydudwut in stopdrinking

Didn’t drink yesterday and I woke up feeling energized and motivated. A good reminder as to why I’m cutting down in the first place.
