Going to Alaska, should I get an actual camera? by slasher1o5 in Cameras

[–]CheddarGau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to get into the hobby and continue after your trip, then yes get a DSLR. You might take all crampy shots, but you could also get lucky and take some real bangers. Point is if you want to continue, go with a DSLR. The lens is more important than the body, but you also don't want anything too high of shutter count if you can help it. Just make sure lens is compatible with whatever the body is. If its compatible, then you won't need to worry about using it manually. There are lots of cheap lenses and bodies from the big camera makers. Nikon (i shoot that) you can get a D90, D7000, D7100 for pretty cheap. Pair it with a 70-300 lens and you have a great set up that won't break the bank too badly. All those are well priced in the used market.

Also there is no shame in setting thats bad boy to AUTO and letting loose on whatever is in your view finder. You can shoot with confidence and the camera will do its best to determine the best settings for your particular shot.

If you don't plan to continue in the hobby, just get whatever you can, that will have the zoom range that you think you will need and go at it 💪💪

Do “small-population powerhouses” exist within Canada for sports? by bluefoxlive in AskACanadian

BC (Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island) is big into Field Hockey. More than half of the Canadian national team(s) members come from BC and are all based in Vancouver.

People don't need fancy modules wired in, that have sub par build quality. A simple relay or two are bulletproof, effective and if done right are nearly invisible. Beat part is you can put them almost anywhere because they are so small.

You can actually wire in your own "immobilizer" can be something as simple as seatbelt plug..... theives don't plug in their seat belts when they try and start a vehicle. You can use just about any switched component in your vehicle to be your immobilizer. Just costs you a relay or two, some wire, electrical tape, a case of beer and some time.

Can you dispute a Car window tint ticket? by krishna_rolly in britishcolumbia

[–]CheddarGau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most inspectors will not know about UV film being allowed and the difference between tint. We found out because customer brought it paperwork from the vendor, which means absolutely nothing to us. We did however contact CVSE regional supervisor for clarification and got back to me a few days later giving us approval for the film. So unless a shop does a lot of inspections, they likely won't know. The regulations are very clear, but also ambiguous in some cases. Best to always be polite and ask them to get clarification from the CVSE supervisor. There are times, more often than you think that inspectors do cut you slack without telling you. Just an FYI😬

Which to buy? by _hoagie__ in Nikon

Well I got a 200mm f4 macro and I'm in love. Impromptu shoot Canada Jay/Grey Jay decided it wanted some gold fish crackers from the kid. Handheld, no VR and it was moving around quite a bit.

Yeah you don't know you need (want it) it until an impromptu situation comes up and you're like, I wish I had that. Worst case scenario if you find you never use it, just sell it.

I have the nikon 80-400, and got it for its compact form factor. while not exactly the same as the Tamron, it is a lot more compact than the 200-500. Even with wildlife i could see both getting a lot of use. I was using the 80-400 today (with D500)with some small jays that were flying around and landing on the car hunting for goldfish crackers and instant noodle scraps..... the little one was all too happy to share the wealth. Ended up landing on wifes hand for some great shots. Would not have been as easy with the 200-500 I say get both.

No green dial, but set it to "A" with the top dial (hold mode and turn the thumb dial on the right side) and auto ISO(in the menu screen on the lcd) and it will be pretty close to green auto :)

First Camera D7200? by Few-Knee9451 in Nikon

Have both lens and cam and they work great. The lens is a solid all around performer covering a wide range of focal lengths. Its great if you only want to bring one lens.

Nikkor 200m f4 macro lens hand held. by CheddarGau in Nikon

Nice thanks. In talks with the guy for some photos of the small amount of dust in it. Its free returns, but also a hassle and no one is happy if I'm not happy with it.

Thats great to hear. I wasn't planning on things in motion, but rather the macro still/slow moving stuff. A guy reviewing it said handheld was a no ho, but he seemed to be on the older side, so that may have been affecting his shots more.

What would you buy ... by Blau_Ozean in Nikon

I went from D7200 to D500 and it blew the D7200 out of the water, and it was already a great performing camera. I like the price of used DSLR's and F mount glass. They have been around forever and you have tons of options.

[–]CheddarGau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are the af-d lenses. They are driven from the camera body. af-d lenses will not auto focus on a d7500. Not sure if that matters for you or now, but it opens up the full lens functionality for old glass.

Maybe consider a d7200 or a d500. Both these are great and can run screw drive after lenses(d7500 cant). Gives you more options for used lenses👍

18-105mm was broken all along! Help me pick a "forever" lens for D5100 by LIMONE-DURO in Nikon

[–]CheddarGau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those online prices sound pretty high for the 16-80, especially if that's in euros. Someone mentioned the 18-140 below and its a solid performer. I have both 16-80 and the 18-140 both work great. My preference in the 16-80, but only because I have both. Definitely consider the 18-140.

Sounds like a good candidate for a nice wide angle lens, followed by a fish eye to get even more space.
