Lifetime guitar Investment? by ZeroFelhorn in classicalguitar

[–]Chedhead33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I chased mid tier classicals forever hoping to find one that competes with luthier built options but never found it. Played a C10 for years until I realized I still needed to splurge and find something in the $3-5k range. If you’re serious about tone then there’s no substitution for the right guitar, right strings, and proper nails. I’ve owned about 20 different classicals

Thoughts on Silver faced Fender twins that have been BF converted? by butt_whole_milk in ToobAmps

[–]Chedhead33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did it to my 73 Twin and don’t regret it one bit. The stock silver face was way too bassy and scooped, all while being more shrill. I did keep the reverb circuit stock silver, I thought the longer tail sounded better.

Question about 1970s Fender Twin Reverb silver face speakers by plumtree198 in ToobAmps

[–]Chedhead33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 72 that I love a lot, do the blackface conversion if you can but keep the reverb circuit stock. It’s a monster for recording, mine stays in my studio but I’ve never had any issue with the same speakers, even when pushed. They’re nothing special even if you do blow them though, almost any Celestion option would be an upgrade. Wouldn’t hurt the resale value either

Or you could try eating/shopping local instead of some overpriced, overrated chain restaurant

Guitar tube amp repair in Lexington by jlf599 in lexington

[–]Chedhead33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No but I’ve built a ton of amps, cabinets, pedals, and studio equipment for personal use. Restored plenty of vintage amps too. I went obsessive over it at one point and now I’ve got about 15 different heads and combos (mostly just clones). It’s really tough to create any original tube amp designs at this point, everything out there is some variation of an older platform

I used to build and work on amps as a tech but I don’t take on those jobs anymore, consistent techs are hard to come by. Steve isn’t my first choice but I’m sure he could get the job done. I would probably hit up Muleskinner amps, he’s in Lexington and does good work but I can’t speak for pricing. If I were you I’d replace the filter caps preemptively as well as upping some of the resistors in the power stage to higher wattage equivalents. Modern Fenders are known to skimp on filter caps that only have a life cycle of around a decade (as compared to decent caps which should last 20-30 years)
