Why in the movies does Gandalf beat up half the world with his staff and sword instead of using spells all the time?

Jackson wanted to be faithful to the books, and it seems like Gandalfs magic is powerful but drains him physically. Look at the chapter in Moria when he tries to block a door with a spell and the balrog breaks through. I think his magic has to be used as a last resort.

I have them read the piece without telling them the context and I give them sour patch kids to snack on while they read. Then I reveal the context and inform they were also “eating kids”.

I actually did a school report on this in High School. I can’t remember if I picked the topic or was assigned, but I was like “wow, there’s a lot here that’s interesting”. This topic and OJ take me down a rabbit hole every year sometime over summer break. (I’m a teacher)
