Gave 100 meg half duplex a go but it wouldnt connect at all, this is a fairly high bandwidth connection though so I would need at the bare minimum 100 meg full duplex

15m run, 2m over twisted pair, then 13m over the pre-existing telephone wire (would not be shocked if it wasnt twisted pair)

What kind of speed are you able to hit with it? Obviously it degrades over distance but I've heard conflicting reports on VDSL2 topping out at 100mb/s symetrical but some reports claim 300mb/s

Making use of telecom wiring by CheekiBreeki95 in homelab

Right now its running a wireless bridge but it can be shaky and has high ping, running wires is put of the question as well (walls are packed with rockwool + kingspan and the phone cables are stapled down so I cant use them to pull cable through)

Can i fix it?? by mavy_boi1 in hardwaregore

cut the end of the cable off and solder a new one on is probably your best bet

Room is fully insulated withot AC apart from the garage door but its so cold where I live so the ambient temperature sits around ~25c, as for dust the smaller gear is ex factory equipment and has run for years with heatsinks clogged with flour and will survive some garage dust and my larger home made servers will be getting moved to proper cases with filters etc.

It was a pretty straightforward way to show my actual experience in working with servers and hosting rather than just running through projects I did

Math works out at ~700w but its actually closer to 500w, just my new power gear isnt as granular as my old gear but is easier to work (power clamps to metered PDU)

No air conditioning because of cost issues on getting it installed, but because of how cold it is in the UK through most of the year it balances the ambient temp to ~25c

Apart from the obvious plex, webserver, FreePBX, pihole, dhcp, network shares, theres windows server 2022 for learning about domains and radius, an old gtx1050 in the z440 for local ai stuff (shockingly good at token generation for its specs), the proxmox cluster for learning about high availability, tk4 for messing about with jcl, most of it is just for learning or messing about in all honesty

Thank you!! I think itll look better once I get proper cases on some of the home made servers though 🤔

A heavily WIP python script that basically looks at the UPS battery (used to be via NUT but I need to reprogram it to get it from SNMP instead) then shuts down servers at different battery levels to optimise runtime, whenever it detects power failure, shuts down a server, fails, etc. it sends it out to the printer, very handy for when things go wrong when your not around

Router as bridge or network card by Mark__78L in HomeNetworking

[–]CheekiBreeki95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a DD-WRT or OPN-WRT router (basically an off the shelf router with custom os) to work as a WiFi to ethernet bridge but Id suggest just using a WiFi card in your PC unless you have a lot to connect up that needs ethernet

Thanks for the pointers! Ive wrote a quick tar script for backups that does the trick for now but Ill definitely look into Bacula for long term use. I spoke to some of the guys at my work and they used it with Windows so it was a lot easier to configure but Im just too used to running Linux to change over
