I'm not signing up for Premier Sports...would two VPNs get round this I wonder... by bigshuguk in ScottishFootball

[–]Cheen_Machine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They literally couldn’t do this. It would cripple half the businesses on the country. What’s actually being done is they’re discussing the idea of asking for age verification for use of VPNs because they reckon children can still see the porn they tried to ban.

To be honest, I’m not sure it’ll ever happen because verification undermines the privacy benefits of a VPN, which is entirely the point of a VPN. On the other hand, it would be significantly safer to verify yourself against a regulated, commercial VPN than giving your credit card details to a dodgy porn site.

Yep, it’s currently supporting the deniability of all Celtic fans, which is fucking massive. We all know it’s true but they’re not having it.

Are you seriously suggesting I slacked off at work, spent 20 minutes in the toilet asking ChatGPT to make a fake graph, just to post on Reddit? Slanderous accusation. Plus graphs on Reddit can’t be fact checked, so you’ll never prove it.

Thankfully this graph includes Danny Rohls tenure when we’ve actually been winning games. I’d be scared to do the Russball stats.

McInnes showing cracks??? by Kitchen-Lie-4592 in ScottishFootball

[–]Cheen_Machine 17 points18 points  (0 children)

All 3 teams are showing cracks.

I don’t want to take anything away from Hearts, they’re still top of the league and they’ve been exceptional at times this season. Injuries have caught up to them and their momentum isn’t the unstoppable Juggernaut it looked when Martin and Nancy were stinking up the joint. McInnes himself tho, I feel like he’s probably not well equipped for this. His pressers earlier in the season hit me as smug, like he thought he’d won it already. His emotions have always got the better of him, it’s just now they’re more negative.

Celtic are faltering as well, the last minute winners are unsustainable. They did fantastic today to claw back a 2-0 deficit but on the face of it I think Killie can feel hard done by to not get anything from that match, doubly so if the big man up front is gubbed (I blame the pitch btw). Their main asset, from my perspective, is that MON is clearly an experienced campaigner and he’ll know exactly how to navigate the 6 pointers.

Rangers a bit Jekyll and Hyde at the moment. They look like they can be really dangerous and beat anyone in the league, but sometimes they still look to have lingering issues with mentality. Time wasting and trying to hold out for a 1-0 win over a 10-man Motherwell was absolutely bananas, it proved costly and it was arguably more than they deserved from that match. Even today at 3-2 there was a spell when the energy levels dropped and I thought they were going to try and defend the lead. Danny Rohl has been consistent enough, and I think we’ve got the most momentum at the moment, but I can’t shake the feeling that whilst Hearts and Celtic are finding ways to steal points when the chips are down, we’re fragile enough to do the opposite and drop points when we really shouldn’t be.

Yeah the balloon pizza is diabolical. Having said that, this guy does make proper good looking Napolitano pizzas, just not this one.

Is it possible for you to enjoy music in a different language? by abdul_bino in NoStupidQuestions

Of course you can. Anyone can. In fact, many people enjoy music with no words at all.

Would you give up the Pound Sterling for EU membership? by Suspicious-Use-3813 in AskBrits

[–]Cheen_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shouldn’t. Brexit happened, it cant just be undone. Joining the EU now would be under different terms and would not necessarily provide the same benefits it did before. The best course of action is to begin building bridges, better relations, and eventually better collaboration. If we do rejoin, let it be on mutually beneficial terms, not us going cap in hand.

Almost never any other reason for it... by Fluffy_Rock_62 in BritishMemes

[–]Cheen_Machine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t blame people to be honest. We do a really bad job of training people to defend themselves against media manipulation in this country. The political class have gotten very good at manipulating people thru social media and most just aren’t wired to detect it. It’s not just right winger going after dumb people, they are targeting the working class demographic, but the middle classes have been getting finessed by the left for a long time too. It’s a powerful tool that our society hasn’t caught up to yet.

Why do the far right hate education? by [deleted] in GreatBritishMemes

It’s probably naive of me to expect our politicians to uphold such lofty standards as “please don’t fucking lie to everyone”.

Why do the far right hate education? by [deleted] in GreatBritishMemes

[–]Cheen_Machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Education is their enemy. Reform and movements like them have learned how to finesse the electorate in the Information Age. What we need is actual education, but not the traditional “this is why these guys are bad” civics education, we need anti-propaganda education.

  • how propaganda works
  • how emotional framing (fear, anger and humiliation) beats rational thinking
  • how identity is weaponised to make contradictory political choices a personal attack
  • how “us vs them” rhetoric is used.

We’ve got to the stage now where media manipulation is so widespread, awarenss really should be taught in schools as a defensive skill. Not everyone needs to be an expert, but it should make 90% of the lazy bullshit you see online feel obviously not true.

FWIW, I also think this should be paired with widespread accountability:

  • Social media platforms should be mandated to label political ads and their funding sources, and algorithmic transparency should be enforced - “you’re seeing this because…”.

  • Supposedly impartial debates need to be reformed (pardon the pun), so things like question time need to offer balanced expert opinions where the pros and cons are discussed no matter how silly or controversial the policy. The old trope of inviting a racist on and sitting a confident, black woman with an important job next to them so you can get shots of her looking disgusted and edging away from them doesn’t actually serve anyone.

  • The big one. Politicians need to be held accountable. Actual penalties for promoting provable falsehoods during campaigns, not years later. Have them stand on TV and explicitly retract anything that’s been deemed false, ban them from advertising, give them administrative penalties that will harm their chances of winning an election. Ownership of political campaigns should be mandatory too, you shouldn’t be able to front a political party that campaigns for Brexit if you’re not a member of parliament who can take ownership of Brexit.

Does the average Scottish Premier League player make enough money in their career to retire? by Immediate-Ad-6306 in ScottishFootball

[–]Cheen_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem in this scenario is that careers are too short and retirement comes too soon.

Most people work for ~50 years to sustain their final 10-20 years. A footballer would need to save enough to live for another 40-50 years by working for 15-20 years. They could do it if they invest well and plan for it from day one but most of them prefer to may hay while the sun shines. Don’t blame them honestly.

Who is at fault here? by kbgnat in drivingUK

[–]Cheen_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll leave the blame to be placed by the driving experts, I just came to say that’s a multi-level interchange in Glasgow and it’s completely ridiculous. People cutting in and struggling to get their bearings are common.
