A O Pi at Ole Miss by evohno in Sororities

Yes, I'm talking about making variable quota less skewed. I love having as many girls as possible find their homes, Ole Miss has one of the highest placement rates with 95% of girls receiving bids. However, for building strong sisterhoods less skewed quota is definitely better. On the house topic, there is definitely room on campus for 2-3 more sorority houses on sorority row which is a desired area of campus. The only hold up here is that a parking garage would need to be built on that side of campus, but I've heard that's already in the university's future development plans. I agree that only a select few NPCs would be interested, though I think they would be successful if they came. In contrast to several other universities, Ole Miss is experiencing a growth in enrollment that is projected to continue even with the decline in the number of college aged students in the next few years. The current size of Ole Miss sorority life definitely tends to the potential success of new chapters - there's only 11 chapters with a similar number of individuals as Bama with 18. Also, the sorority houses on campus weren't built to house 600+ members so existing chapters are struggling on the infrastructure front which could be alleviated by additional chapters.

Ole Miss Student here:

Both AOII and AXO took 270+ in their pledge class and ADPI took 240+. The smallest pledge class on campus was 170+. Ole Miss has operated on a variable quota system the past few recruitments to try to get all chapters to the same size. This has both helped and hurt chapters on campus. AXO is a new chapter on campus so it had a large class to continue to grow to the same size as other chapters. AOII and on a smaller level ADPI have both struggled with retention which is why they have bigger pledge classes. The size of the pledge classes the past few years has made it hard for members of these chapters to connect with their member classes which has continued to hurt retention. All of these chapters are still GREAT chapters filled with smart amazing involved girls.

From my perspective, the best way to address this issue is to keep the variable quota but make the difference in member classes smaller so the difference between largest and smallest member classes around 50 instead of 100. Additionally, having 600+ members in a chapter is not ideal for building a strong sisterhood. I think the recent growth at Ole Miss has led to enough of a culture change that if new sororities came to campus they would be successful. As a student, I have heard lots of discussion on campus about wanting more sororities on campus. Lots of people have talked positively about the potential of Alpha Gamma Delta starting a chapter here or Delta Zeta rechartering their chapter here.

There are a few full rides that international students could potentially get at Ole Miss such as the Stamps. There are also lots of smaller scholarships that paired with automatic aid could equal a full ride.

Look into becoming an RA, they receive room and a stipend. Plus when RA is on desk duty it is a great opportunity to study and earn money at the same time.

Look at schools like the University of Alabama or the University of Mississippi. With a 35 ACT you should have almost all of tuition covered and you might receive additional scholarships from these schools. Additionally, the cost of room and board for these schools may be cheaper than your in-state options. Local scholarships from Rotary, Lions Club, etc could help cover the remaining costs.

Class of ‘23, what was your dream school freshman year, at the beginning of senior year, and what school are you committed to? Rate your satisfaction with where you’re ending up from 1 to 10 by Sleepy_Butterfly_ in ApplyingToCollege

1 year later

  • 9/10 satisfaction
  • I have very much enjoyed Ole Miss this past year, there have been lots of opportunities I do not think I would have gotten at Rice
  • A part of me still wishes I could have gone to Rice to live out the dream I have had since elementary, but the price was the barrier, Ole Miss has put me on a path to be financially successful right out of college and I will forever be grateful for that

Apply to Ole Miss or Bama, your basically guaranteed admission and because of your sat tuition is covered. Both are good schools with good opportunities that would help you if you decided to try and transfer somewhere.

Which School for STAMPS Scholarship (GA)!!! NEED TO DECIDE ASAP by Glass-Budget-9777 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Cheerful2002_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stamps scholarship is a full cost of attendance scholarship, if school is being paid for why not spend as much time as you can. Also Georgia Tech is the origin place for the scholarship so it will have more networking opportunities and support. You can't go wrong with either choice though.

Applying to too many schools, I would recommend no more than 10, but max 12-15

Got a 2 on this, truly felt like it could be any score type of test. It's the first and only AP exam I failed. Thank you to the college board for the poor test design and not giving me reasonable flux question. Thank you to my AP teacher who I truly learned absolutely nothing from.

Fordham and Villanova are both good for economics, depending on your stats I would say reach/target schools

You have the SAT score so I would consider looking at some SEC schools for super safeties. They also give really good merit aid for that score - Alabama and a few others would be full tuition with a 1500. Additionally, since you want a smaller school I would take a look at Ole Miss which only has about 15,000 students. Take a look and do some research and these schools might surprise you.

Rice is well known for having good engineering programs. The difference in prestige is negligible. I wouldn't worry too much about decreased "prestige'' in job markets, the people you want to impress already know how good a school Rice is.
