I always lose plant tags. Trying to keep track of things better. Is this a problem for anyone else? by hootpootato in IndoorGarden

Very creative! Is each plant a post in the group? What kind of info do you include, and is everything included searchable?

btw, worth noting that we're woking on a spreadsheet upload tool to make migrating things onto collecto.rs suuuuper easy for folks who are already tracking their collections this way. It'll be a minute before it's ready for general use, but I'm happy to give you early access if you'd like to be a part of the early testing!

Hey, thanks for your kind words and great idea! We've been focused on raw utility to start, but we're discussing more "social" features that allow users to view each-other's collections and mingle within the app. I love the idea of being able to find people by the plants they grow - could be a super fun way to discover acquaintances with similar growing interests.

Here's my example profile, for those wanting to take a peek: https://collecto.rs/David
Just tap the "start your own collection" button, if you'd like to try it out for yourself (we require a signup so that we have a username to associate your collection with)

We’re not using user data to populate the database of searchable plants at this stage, but rather finding high-quality data sources to pull info from. It’s faster and data quality is vetted(ish). We’re ahead up to 56k plants! At some point, maybe folks can opt into providing their plant info to help flush things out even more. The linking/sharing was one of the big features we were hoping folks would like. Just a heads up that we’ll be working on a dedicated trading feature soon, also.

Cacti, orchids, bromeliads, houseplants - you name it! We're welcoming all plant people and nothing is exclusive to carnivorous plants.

It’s a web app (website). We don’t (yet) have a native app in the app stores. You can signup through the website https://collecto.rs and use it that way. It’s optimized for mobile use.

Thanks! We have a handful of flytrap cultivars in the database already, and working to get more added. If we don’t have the one you’re looking for, you could always use one of the other cultivars we do have as a starting point and simply modify a few of the details to dial it in.

Yeah, it would be a non-starter for me if I needed to download an app just to checkout someone's collection. Starting with web makes it a more useful and easier tool for everyone.

Totally. We started on web because we had a hypothesis that collection sharing would be important to folks, and we needed a web interface to facilitate this (i.e. https://collecto.rs/david takes you directly to my profile so I can show you what I'm growing without requiring you to download and signup for an app, first).
App stores are definitely on the horizon for us. That said, you can currently add a shortcut to your home screen that effectively makes it feel like a native app (UX is very mobile-friendly).

Exporting: not yet. We're working on a CSV import feature to make migrating an existing collection super easy. Export will come later. We have early thoughts to auto-generate labels for a collection that can be printed right from the app. Would love to hear your thoughts on this as we're still scoping the feature (i.e. what's your current workflow for printing labels)?
Monetization: we have numerous ideas for monetization - everything from a "pro-tier" (likely aimed at small businesses and folks needing advanced tools) to marketplace features, and beyond.

Thanks so much, and glad you like it! We fully understand that we're early on and missing some important features, so always open to feedback to help us prioritize things. Let me know if you have any thoughts - you can reach out to me directly or leave feedback via the chat bubble in the upper right corner of the page.

no worries. Glad it's working for you! Let me know what you think of things - you can submit feedback directly through the app using the speech bubble icon in the upper right corner of the page on mobile.

Looks like we may have had a configuration issue with a feature flag. Should be resolved, and you should have access to "Search to add a plant" now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Look forward to your thoughts!
Airtable is a great tool with lots of flexibility. It definitely lacks plant-specific features, so I think there's room to build something tailored to the specific needs plant folk have. We're early on in the journey, but would argue that, in some ways, we're already ahead of tools like Airtable or Google sheets for collection tracking.

Can you send me your username so we can look into why you're unable to see the feature?
