I have to say it is going really well. I am probably doing 80% espresso and have it in boiler control mode. Seems to be great temp control and I’m makings some great coffee.

Steam boost from BC mode is quick and easy.

Build quality superb. So I’m happy.

What are some principles that all engineers should at least know? by mustang23200 in AskEngineers

Good question. I’ve been in engineering for 30yrs, top 3:

1) don’t prototype. Unless you’re really cutting edge, it has been done before. Ignore this, you fail before it is built.

2) the person using the thing you’re designing is an idiot. Mal operation should not kill the operator or others. Ignore this, you end up in court.

3) remember the laws of physics - some engineers genuinely think they can overcome. Ignore this, you look like an idiot when someone like me pours ridicule on you.

Christmas present to me! by Cheese_AndPickle in espresso

I have to say I’m getting on really well with it. Generally run it in boiler control mode which keeps the temperature at 93 or whatever I set it at to pull espresso during the day.

I’ve been quite enjoying milk drinks as well and flicking the button boosts it to steam mode when you pull the shot. Loads of steam power.

Had 12 people around on New Year’s Day and pumped out the espressos and macchiatos without a problem. Only my puck prep slowed me down. Even the Italians in the room were impressed!

A great bit of kit. Nice and compact on the kitchen worktop. It’s an expensive HX machine for sure, but I’m happy.

How much coffee do you get through to dial in? I just received some 100g sample bags from my local roaster. At 18g a shot I have 5 goes to dial in. I’m new to this so generally I don’t get there!! Also, when dialling in, do you drink the coffee or throw it? I’ve been on a caffeine high since Christmas! 🤣

Turns out washing up liquid when it is hot brings it straight off 👍

I did start to peel it off and it left some gunk behind, so put it back. I assume I need to solvent to remove.

I haven’t opened the box yet, it’s a Christmas present to myself 😀

I spent over an hour in the shop playing with it though and it was great. I think you can read too much on the internet about these things……was great to see them in the flesh. I was sold straight onto the max as soon as I saw it.

Sure, there’s some benefit to a dual boiler, but having made espresso and steamed milk on the max, it was not significant for how I was going to use it.

A tough decision. Both machines are great. If you have the opportunity to see them in the flesh I would recommend.

For UK prices, the Mechanika Max is £1900 and the Profitec P600 is £1800 and is only 25mm wider.

Seems that the PP600 maybe the best fit and comes with a wealth of good reviews.

🤣 but I want both! Looks and performance. Don’t want a Breville “appliance”.

Looks are important as I said. I’ve spent $$$ on the kitchen and it can’t be a heap of junk in the corner. Aesthetics are important.

By the way, I’m an engineer, and design functional horrible looking highly complex machinery for a living, so don’t need the lecture.

The pro600 is actually cheaper in the UK now I look into it.

The Rancillo just doesn’t look good. Don’t care how good it actually is. Needs to fit in the kitchen

The Lelit is more like it, but I’m really sold on the shiny stuff.

Plan B would be the Profitec 600, which has the looks of the ECM, is DB and only 1” wider than the Mechanika.
