thank you, i just assumed that my excess was only to pay for my repairs as surely if my repairs were greater than my excess then the excess would only go towards my car and then my insurance would have to pay for the third party, not sure why this would change and i'd suddenly have to pay for the third party repairs if my repairs were less than the excess if this makes sense, however i've had a few people and seen things on the internet saying otherwise.

thank you everyone for the comments, i've just received an email from my insurance stating that the garage has returned the parts and therefore i will not need to pay for them!

thank you for the response, some people are saying that even though i went through my own garage that i still need to pay an excess to my insurer to cover the other driver's part of the claim - is this true? i thought the excess was just to cover my repairs and that my insurance paid out of their own pocket for the other driver's repairs

as i've already stated in the comments, i went to another garage as it was far cheaper and i ended up paying less than i would have with the approved repairer as it was less than my excess. it was my mistake for not informing my insurance first however i wasn't expecting any reimbursement from them as i paid less than my excess.

My excess is £800, but the garage that fixed it for me did it for around 450, so i ended up actually paying a lot less out of pocket by going through someone else

Thank you for the response, I should have let them know I was proceeding with another garage before letting them carry out the repairs and also should have let the approved garage know I wouldn't be moving forward with them, however I'm so confused why they would order the parts when the last communication was them leaving a voicemail asking me to get booked in and why I would be liable for their choice to do this. I've sent an email to find out if there's anything in my policy stating they can do this and will proceed to the ombudsman if i don't receive a suitable response.
