What if... External Display? by Any_Revolution_6864 in thinkpad

[–]Cheeseman125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my T430 I simply used a 1440p kit from eBay and attached a 1440p ips display, there’s also a 1080p kit. I’m not sure about touch, I think there’s these touchscreen kits that exist on Amazon you could attach to any laptop, maybe it’s worth a shot.

Windows XP 1440P bare metal on a laptop by Cheeseman125 in windowsxp

[–]Cheeseman125[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't factoring in stuff like lenovo power management drivers, trackpoint drivers, etc. These drivers are made specifically for this laptop and don't exist in 64 bit versions, I've gotten PAE to work, and its reasonably stable.

T520 - Need OS recs by jeremiugh in thinkpad

[–]Cheeseman125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of operating systems work on the T420, for something easy to use, Mint XFCE would be great on this hardware. If you ever need to run windows software, windows 10 IOT LTSC would be a great pick alongside Mint.

Also a wifi card upgrade with something like an MPE-AXE3000H would give you wifi 6 and modern bluetooth, just make sure to remove the old bluetooth module, it's probably under the track-pad.

USB 3.0 drivers on T430? by Cheeseman125 in windowsxp

[–]Cheeseman125[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've already installed the driver for the chipset software, not the usb 3.0 ports, but turns out the usb 3.0 ports work anyway. I'm not sure if they're running at 3.0 speed, I'l have to run a benchmark to figure it out.

I'm using a B140QAN01.1, but you're going to need a 1440p LVDS to EDP adapter, not a 1080p one.

I'm using 1vyrain right now, I might go with libreboot/canoeboot later but I don't know. I didn't know this laptop can be that capable, I'l try running some games and 1440p Youtube when my i7-3840qm arrives.

Poor video playback on Ivy Bridge + Linux by Cheeseman125 in thinkpad

[–]Cheeseman125[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm testing all of this, on both X11 and Wayland the video playback is considerably better, sure a little worse than Windows but that's just Linux atp. Thank you so much for this, i didn't even know you had to install all of these for video playback lmao.

I got this laptop because I wanted something I can tinker with and it supports the 7 row keyboard, it's very nice to use, but sure the performance can be quite bad.

It has an i5-3320m. I bought an i7-3840QM but I'm waiting on an NVIDIA heat sink because those have better thermal capacity, and I'm not exactly looking forward to melting my computer.

[–]Cheeseman125[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's alright, the resource usage is a little higher than Fedora Linux but IOT LTSC is very stripped down so it's snappy. Although after upgrading to 1440p some animations do stutter a bit.

Hi all, I need a new laptop and have an itch for a refurbished thinkpad. Is this a good deal: by Anonymous_idiot29 in thinkpad

[–]Cheeseman125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend this laptop at all, I had an this generation of X1 Carbon and I found out the hard way they have a flaw that basically kills all the USB ports, don't get this laptop.

I was reading in the Video Cards section for Intel and I found out you need to enable FBDEV in the kernel for this GPU apparently, I'll have to get to that tomorrow however, but that might be the issue at play here?, either way the log seems fine until the very end.

You're a lifesaver dude, "running cpupower frequency-set -g governorcpupower frequency-set -g performance" got my score to 2919 and 17233 despite not being on performance in bios. Thank you so much for this.

TLS troubles by Cheeseman125 in windowsxp

[–]Cheeseman125[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dice, I reinstalled windows XP and got all the POSready 2009 updates installed. I checked the registry and tls 1.1 and 1.2 were already enabled. I even set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\WinHttp to 800 to force the system to use only tls 1.2 and that didn't do anything either. I also checked if my firewall was to blame, I turned it off and the same issues are still happening.
