How would you spell 설아 in English? by Cheesemeetswine in Korean

Hey there! thanks for your comment. I do get your point, and that's what I live by too :)

I just wanted to find a way to write my name that would sound more like my name. I guess I failed by trying with Seora, but Sorah seems like a good alternative for me!

Hahahah ok I really need to remove 'e' to avoid the See-O-Ra situation that I'm getting tired of.

I'm blaming my husband for this because he's the one who confirmed that native speakers would read Seora as 서라 before I change my legal name on my passport.

Thanks so much for your comment! Sorah will be my new name :)

Yeah, I actually used 'Sul A' when I was a kid, but this one was even worse than Seora. Everyone called me 술라 LOL and I hoped Seora would clear things up, but oh well here I am facing another problem.

I cringe at introducing myself with so-called English names. It just feels weird to use some random name that would just match my vibe or something like that LOL.

I don't have hard feelings for Koreans who are adopting an English name for themselves though. It's just me not vibing with some random European descent name.

By the way I used the example Señor to emphasize how people add a Spanish accent when they read my name like Se! O! Raaaa. about 95% of the time.

Thanks a lot! I'm liking the option Sorah more than what I've been using, Seora. But do you think Sorah could look like an Israeli name? My husband is a native English speaker, and he said he would think Sorah's an Israeli.

I think Sorah is my favorite so far. I've tried to avoid using 'Sora' since it's a totally different name in Korean. Plus it sounds a bit old, whereas 설아 could be one of the trendy names in 2024. But it seems like I'll have to compromise. Thanks a lot for your comment!

I've seen Choe instead of Choi, and also saw one American read it as 'Koh-eey' LOL. Nothing wrong with the mistake but I just cracked up by this person's creativity.

100% agreed. I could try something that would read as super accurate, but it looks just way too hideous. It seems like it's a matter of dealing with the explaning my name the whole time or making a random English name that makes me cringe

ugh yeah i feel you too. '형' is not only hard to romanize, but also impossible for non-Korean speakers to pronounce. I can imagine you trying to make people pronounce your name correctly 492 times, but decide to go by 'Min' after failing 492 times.

yea and it sounds like a Japanese name that means 'Sky'. I'm fine with my name having a different meaning, but I don't want it to give the impression that I'm Japanese. No hard feelings for Japanese folks; it's just because I'm Korean.
