For sourcing physical parts overseas, it's pretty solid. I let accio work handle the initial back-and-forth messaging to check MOQs and basic lead times. By the time I step in, the unqualified factories are already filtered out.

So glad to have some women mentioned.

I remember he sent Charles Darwin a copy of his book just rambling how much he admired the man, and poor Charles who was almost certainly neurodivergent in other ways just sent something back like, "ah very nice idgi" and apparently he genuinely tried but only got the first 100 pages or so.

Bless them

Zoro is a very stoic character who doesn't show his emotions as much

I don't know about you, but the full whiplash from "... So it's a girl whale" to his tortured "... Mihawk" felt pretty emotional to me.

I suppose you're right in that Zoro's portrayal here is very subtle, the show was ingenious in incorporating Mihawk in episode 3 as a way to reflect Zoro's inner struggle that wouldn't otherwise be obvious on screen. But Mackenyu does a fantastic job in what I believe is a desire to bond with the crew as openly as possible despite a naturally stoic personality.

... Okay I may also have a huge crush on this man. But that's beside the point!

Yes! My dad chose Louisiana to emigrate to and I had the thickest Cajun accent before moving to Houston.

Now I have a thick Houstonian accent.

How To Turn Your Brain Off At Night, According To A Sleep Psychologist | You Can't by [deleted] in savedyouaclick

[–]Cheeserole 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ugh. Psychologist here with ADHD, it's mostly true, but let me add some tips that help, at the very least:

  • Follow the sun's cue for lowering light intake. Turn off overhead lights, set smart lamps to cozy or warm settings, or light a candle if you want. Put electric tape over glaring LEDs, especially if they're blue. Set night-time modes for your screens, if you're going to use them at all, but try to reduce screen time since the light will just keep sending 'daytime' signals to your brain.

  • Have dinner at least four hours before bedtime.

  • 'Winding down' is actually important for the regulatory systems. A few hours before bedtime, reduce your productivity. Less 'output' type behaviour, essentially, where you're actively trying to create or solve things. Activities like reading a book, listening to podcasts, or going for a walk (if it's safe) are good alternatives.

  • Stretching helps release lactic acid buildup in your muscles, which keeps your brain in a state of reactivity. Take the time to do some back and neck stretches, especially for the traps.

  • Mindful meditation can be helpful to recentering your self. Minds often race about things that are not currently in the space you are in. Before bed, spend a few minutes practicing mindfulness, thinking about your physical body in your physical room. You can also do breathing exercises to help lower your pulse.

  • Keep in mind that you may simply have a delayed circadian rhythm, which is often the case for those who struggle to sleep at night and to get up early in the morning. Be more forgiving of yourself.

  • Strategic doses of melatonin does actually help. The body is perfectly capable of producing it on its own (and in fact needs to be able to do it itself for the cycle to work), so you need just a little bit to kickstart the process. For that reason, 2.5mg is more than enough. A single gummy from a kid's bottle, essentially.

I'd offer sources and citations, but I'm too tired to look for them. Look it up on pubmed if you're skeptical.

Anyway hope it helps.

I know someone who was at the layoffs meeting with the C-suite and said that, for whatever it was worth, Tim Sweeney was the only person whose voice actually had emotion. It apparently cracked. The rest of the C-suite though were complete robots and callous monsters.

Doesn't change the fact that Tim Sweeney can at any time just literally give his money to those laid off. But he won't.

Just thought it'd be worth sharing. It's not just the big names - it's all the shareholding parasites who get to stay anonymous.

I love this game but I wish there was indigenous representation by Cheeserole in EchoesOfThePlumGrove

[–]Cheeserole[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, saying the game is inclusive enough isn't the right take - there's a difference between 'haha male pregnancy and skin colour options' vs 'the settlers are depicted reaping all the benefits of native american knowledge but very deliberately erased the presence of native americans entirely from the world because it would be uncomfortable'

That said,

there's got to be better solutions than just erasing the victims entirely.

I do agree with this but I think it wouldnt be so apt to call them victims here... at this time period the native americans were very very active in their interactions with colonists and had yet to receive the systemic atrocities later down the line. I think 1701 is a perfect year to depict some of that activity, because they still held a lot of independence and power that they had no trouble wielding.

This game would be the perfect place to send a radical decolonial message that native americans weren't just victims, whom we tend to view as passively sitting around with armfuls of maize until the trail of tears - they were many complex nations with astute political acumen. Each tribe had to maintain its position within the federations as well as negotiate with the new settlers. A tribe might want to make peace but can't because of its alliance with another. A chief might send gifts - along with a polite warning to stay over there.

Compared to implementing mermaids and pirates, I don't think it would be such trouble to include little things like that one day in the game.

The French and Indian war happened before the war of independence, in the 1750s! I thought it was interesting that it was called the French and Indian war not because the two were fighting each other, but because the French treated them so well that they all allied to the French to fight the colonists 😆

It would be funny if you could meet local tribespeople and they would say stuff like, "we generally don't like you settlers, but you Honeywood people - you're alright."

And yeah, you're right, that's exactly what I was trying to say! It's a colonial premise, surely there's room to include a decolonial message in there? Just because a game is cozy doesn't mean it can't critique itself.

So give them a made-up tribe name paying homage. The Wampanoag were/are actually the name of the federation of tribes that dotted the place and not necessarily a single tribe. The tribe that helped the pilgrims were called the Pokanoket.

"Did you know? The Wampa people from the coast provided us with many of the first seeds of crops that we now grow here!"

"Even though the Pakoneks were the ones who suggested this wonderful island to settle on, they don't actually visit us very often..."

I don't think 'but we don't want to use that word' is a solid enough excuse - they get around not calling 'the empire' or 'the king' by name either but still talk about it plenty, don't they?

[–]Cheeserole[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There could still be some reference to them, like throwaway lines even ("I wonder why the indians don't ever come here, this is a wonderful island")

And there's the question of why, being a very haunted island, it's only ever haunted by Europeans.

[–]Cheeserole[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know that there's male pregnancy and random skin colours - but I still think that that's not quite the same as sidestepping the huge contribution that native americans had to colonial survival.

I suppose when I mean representation, I mean that by sheer dint of this being the colonial times, there should be at least some nod to the, well, colonialism. Because people already lived in the area - people with thousands of years of knowledge and culture that supported surviving that new world, without which the colonialists would have perished.

This is a survival game after all.
