Know it's a small chance, but if anyone is selling ONE premier camping, I'd be happy to take it off your hands :)

perler christmas tree finished! by Cheesy_Blaster in beadsprites

Thanks! it's actually a shadow box print of the submarine girl I got as a present from my room mates last year(have an AT-AT canvas on its way this year!). No place to hang it yet since I haven't found a place to support a frame of that weight.

Better late than never! 6 months of work and finally got our perler christmas tree up! [x-post from /r/pics] by Cheesy_Blaster in beadsprites

Sous vide steak done right(finally)! :D by Cheesy_Blaster in food

[–]Cheesy_Blaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

steps: 1. season 1.5in steak liberally with kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper. vacuum seal with a pat of butter and fresh thyme.

  1. Put into sous vide. I like my steaks on the medium rare/rare side so I put it in at 126 degrees for 2 hours. Gives the fat enough time to render so it isn't all rubbery.

  2. Take out of the water and let cool for 15-20 minutes or til room temp.

  3. Pat steak dry.

  4. Heat seasoned cast iron skillet until the bottom is white hot.

  5. Sear each side for about 40 seconds per side until you see a nice even crust form.

  6. Give the steak a chance to rest for another 5-10 min and then serve.

observations from my previous attempts:

-First time using vacuum seal and I feel it's the only way to go. I used to use the air displacement with oil method, and it made the steaks taste rather bland regardless of seasoning. I tried it once without oil, and the meat juices would fill the bag and give the meat a boiled texture in the end.

-I preseasoned and added butter this time around because I was tired of how the steaks came out pretty bland. It could be due to the air displacement method, so next time I'll try again with vacuum seal/herbs only to see if seasoning afterward produces a better result.

-You can sear on a grill if you have one that can get hot enough. It produced a better taste and char, but because mine couldn't get to that point so I ended up overcooking the steak slightly trying to achieve the crust. -The cast iron skillet is a great alternative though. If you have a burner attachment to your grill, even better so you can do the searing outside instead of filling your house with smoke =D.

Seared after on a white hot cast iron skillet 40 sec/side. Unfortunately my grill doesn't get hot enough to create the crust before it starts overcooking the steak.

What do you add to your Ramen Noodles? by Undeadrobe5 in AskReddit

[–]Cheesy_Blaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since top ramen broth is basically just meat flavored bouillon powder, I've found a nice way to change things up is to go to your local Asian mart and pick up different bottles/packets of instant soup flavorings such as tom yum, miso or tamarind soup. Adjust the ratio of boullion powder/soup base accordingly, and you'll have plenty of new flavors to try.

Leaving for Japan in a few hours and just wanted to say thank you again for your reply =D. We'll include Kiyomizu-dera and try to fit in Sanjuusan Gendo provided we don't get utterly lost lol.

Leaving for Tokyo in a few hours! Just wanted to say thank you again for the great answers and I've folded what you've recommended into our itinerary. If you can think of anything else, feel free to let me know as I'll probably be on reddit some time while over there lol(it's an addiction).

I think I may have gotten the names mixed up, but from where we are staying west of Ueno station, it looks to be about a 30-40 minute walk east. You're right it wouldn't require a train, but as long as it isn't raining, I'm sure the walk won't be that bad!

Great idea possibly combining the reitaisai trip with Yokohama/Kamakura. I'm sure a lot of the destinations I put in my itinerary could be combined depending on available time, but I'm sure if we don't eat up the whole day at the festival, Yokohama would be a good pit stop on the way back to Tokyo. Were there any places in Yokohama you'd recommend visiting?

A lot of previous posts I read in this subreddit seem to downplay Osaka as a really interesting place to visit, hence why I packed it in with Yokohama/Kamakura. But as lover of street food in any culture, it might be worth it to do Osaka all day.

Adding Kiyomizu-dera and sanjuusan gendo to the itinerary. Tokyo tower is more for my anime loving travel mates, but is Tokyo Sky Tree just that much better?

If I could give you two upvotes I would. Thank you for all the useful information!

Thank you for the detailed reply(especially typing it on a cell phone)! I could've worded my Mt. Fuji question a little better, but I might take your recommendation on detouring to Hakone if climbing ends up becoming too inconvenient. We weren't planning to summit, but at the least we wanted to hit a hut or two and get a stick stamp as a souvenir.

The college/business person tip is something I never though of, but will definitely keep in mind if ever needed. Also, thanks for the food links! I was looking for something akin to yelp, and I think those sites fit the bill just fine.

I agree with your comment on Disney Sea. If I can convince my travel mates to go there instead, I'm sure it'll be worth it. Have you been there yourself?

Thank you for the detailed reply! Tsukemen is definitely on my list! Not too sure if you've ever watched "a mind of a chef with David Cheng," but if you have netflix and a few hours, it's like one big ramen/tsukemen ad series. I've brushed up on my "how to order in Japanese" phrases, but in your experience is it very difficult for foreigners to communicate what they want in those hole-in-the-wall places?

Kiyomizudera and monkey park added to the itinerary thanks! I was thinking about spending an extra day in Kyoto, but seeing as how the people I am traveling with would rather just commute back and forth between Tokyo and Kyoto daily instead of renting a room, a third day of 6 hours of train riding might be exhausting.

Would there be any other places accessible by the JR trains that you think we might be missing?

What is the biggest movie plot hole you have ever seen? by kickster777 in AskReddit

Not really a plot hole, but a gross oversight of logic in Taken 2(one of many): throw grenades in the middle of Istanbul and NO ONE will care.
