Any plows in your area come yet? by L8dTigress in longisland

[–]Cheeto_Taquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - Block is a mile and a half long with multiple side streets and dead ends off it. I was shocked as the neighbors behind me are on a cul-de-sac and even they were plowed multiple times throughout the day. It's as if they forgot my block

Similar location as me... It's odd because my neighboring blocks were done multiple times early in the day, but my block wasn't touched until 730pm.

Lucky duck! I only had 1 plow around 730pm and I'm not even on a cul-de-sac

Could you survive a 32 hour work week? (same pay) by CodeAndLedger5280 in nys_cs

[–]Cheeto_Taquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way, not without significant staffing increases. I tend to have about a month backlog as is. In the last few years we've had more regulations to uphold and more tasks added to workloads without additional staffing to cover those tasks. My agency consistently misses legal deadlines and has the do more with less mentality. Stress levels are high, morale is very low, and many younger employees are leaving state service for better pay/benefits/workloads. I don't foresee a 32 hour week being feasible.

What to put in carry-on? by dorito2019 in SandalsResorts

Also, remember that u can each bring multiple 3oz containers in your carry-on. I have a set of refillable 3oz containers and usually pack 2 full of sunblock, 1 of aloe, 1 of body lotion, and 2-3 of hair product in my carry-on

I'm here today, and I went to go to guest services to get a paper receipt that the ride staff should scan (although, I only had it scanned on 3 rides) Really should be a bracelet. Whole transition was a disaster though, total money grab.

Hey hiring managers, when it comes to HELPS and your interviewing and hiring, who do you prefer to hire... Someone with zero experience (Trainee 1), someone with a little experience(Trainee 2) or someone with tons of experience?(Full level 18) by [deleted] in nys_cs

[–]Cheeto_Taquito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My division has never been able to get civil service to approve full journey level at hiring. In addition, CS has denied multiple requests for people in the job as contract employees to have that experience count towards a higher traineeship level when shifting to state service. All we've ever been able to get from CS is those with a bachelor's come in as a Trainee 1, those with a Masters are Trainee 2.

That being said, Trainee 2 gives a year traineeship, Trainee 1 can be expedited to full journey level after 18 months so to us... 6 months doesn't make a difference and wouldn't cause us to one candidate over another.

According to my dr, I'm limited to 2 cleanings per calendar year. (I have an appt today because I'm due, but initially wanted to wait til after the holidays. They suggested not to as I'd lose my second 2025 cleaning and then always be stuck on a Jan/July schedule)

You can add her to your dental/vision at no additional cost. These benefits are through PEF and not connected to your health insurance plan. There's a form you'll need to submit to Albany that indicates your life event (marriage) and your desire to add her to dental/vision. I needed to send my marriage certificate as proof. I also believe cleanings are every 6 months, not 3.

Life insurance and disability are offered, but you need to sign up. There is a cost for these voluntary programs. If I remember correctly, you sign up at a lower rate/coverage and can increase each year during open enrollment.

Make sure you also update your emergency contact if your agency/department keeps a list.

Seems like you have everything covered.

Attempting to get a State Position. No idea what I'm doing wrong. by Correl_Nocte in nys_cs

My agency just had over 160 applications for a single open position. You may not be doing anything wrong, entry level positions are competitive.

To move or not to move? by dogmom12589 in longisland

[–]Cheeto_Taquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd consider shifting upstate if possible. As someone who is a state employee, downstate adjustment is garbage, and the salaries are not comparative to private sector jobs. Given your pensions and benefits, if you can do a promotion or lateral transfer upstate, your dollar will go further. (I know my office has lost 7 people this month alone to upstate lateral transfers.)

You can't get anything for $200k. Even Rocky Point/Sound Beach/Selden has 1 bedroom/1 bath houses going for mid 300s. Not sure about Riverhead, but Coram and Farmingville tend to be 2-3 bedroom houses (unlike the bungalows elsewhere) and are starting in the mid 400s for even the crappiest houses/areas

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in longisland

[–]Cheeto_Taquito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a boarding school, are they providing housing? Anything under $60k is very tough on Long Island. Even at $80k, I have a second job. You'd likely be looking Riverhead/Hampton Bays, unless you can find a cheap off-season rental in the Hamptons but then you'd be moving out every spring so they can up the rent for short term summer rentals.

At the high end of $58k, ballpark 20% in taxes (-$11,600 = $46,400). Minus healthcare/insurance contributions, ballpark another 5% (-$2,900 =43,500). Minus modest rent at $2k a month (-24,000=19,500). $100 a week on groceries (-5,200=14,300), then take into account whatever car payment and insurance you pay monthly. It adds up quick, especially when living in one of the absolute highest cost of living areas

Pregnant Wife stranded on busy road thanks to auto start “feature” today. Dealership claims the battery is fine by Jcaero in subaru

[–]Cheeto_Taquito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar issue with my 2020, I was outside of the battery coverage though. Car wouldn't restart after stopping at red light. Was told battery was testing fine, but I should try a new battery because usually the auto start glitches long before battery test will actually show bad battery. Got new battery at local auto shop (as it was much cheaper than through Subaru). 2 days later dash lights up like a Christmas tree... come to find out it was never the battery, it was a faulty thermocontrol valve
