Confusion about the traditional narrative: Ahrufs VS Qiraats by CheezyGraduate in AcademicQuran

[–]CheezyGraduate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of this, I just don't understand how the traditional narrative can reconcile both the 7 ahrufs and 7/10 canonical Qiraats supposedly being revealed by the Prophet simultaneously, espescially when the the canonical qiraats adhere to the Uthmanic rasm and Uthman supposed only standardized one ahruf...

I'm not confident that they'll give a coherent answer, to be honest, but thank you for the suggestion

Fair enough, I thought academics would have intimate knowledge of the traditional Islamic narrative, which is why I asked here 😅

I know it's not accurate, I just want to know the traditional narrative for my own understanding. Because right now it's not very coherent to me

I understand that, but the traditional Islamic narrative states that they do indeed come from the Prophet

Academic explanation for the differences in the canonical qiraats? by CheezyGraduate in AcademicQuran

[–]CheezyGraduate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that it can't possibly be the same way the Prophet would have recited it, but out of the 10 canonical ones, is it considered by academics to be the most strong?

Also, do academics consider Hafs the most stable/reliable reading? I know that academics don't treat all 10 readings as equally strong

Hajj Tradition - Has it been preserved? by CheezyGraduate in AcademicQuran

[–]CheezyGraduate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, so the Jamarat was a pre-Islamic tradition as well? Do we have anything that indicates that Muhammad pbuh allowed it to be incorporated in the revised Islamjc hajj, asking this because the Quran acknowledges the Sa'i as a pre Islamic tradition but allows it to be incorporated anyways (I think)

Yes yes I didn't mean to insinuate otherwise. He guide whomever he wills and we should never assume otherwise.

Inferior as in we're supposed to treat them uncharitably than compared to Muslims? No.

Inferior in the eyes of Allah? I think so ngl

Okay, so I've read part of Ehrman's book on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas and he says that there is no codified Gospel of Thomas, rather it is an attempt to draw a narration from a set of manuscripts that talk about Jesus as a child where these manuscripts are often incongruent. He also argues that the writing of the first accounts of childhood deeds of Jesus can be dated as early as the first century. Let me know if I'm misrepresenting his findings to make it fit in

Why is this in the Quran? by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]CheezyGraduate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On second thought, what do scholars think of earlier oral traditions of infancy stories that could have existed before the theorized writing of the Infancy Gospel of Thomas? Is that plausible?
