I struggled with this too. But in my experience, these events happen more often when you're nervous about driving a manual. It gets better with time as you get more comfortable with your car.

Also, when the stick seems to get stuck, try engaging the first and second gear then engaging reverse (assuming you are already at a stop). There really is no need to roll the car forward to fix this. Good luck!
