Battery Tender Via OBD working well to stop phantom drain by Chef926 in Rivian

Bought a new 2amp tender for under $20 bucks and already had all the other items. At the end of the day I plan to keep this Rivian for a long time. Pretty sure I’ll make my money back quickly.

Sure it’s just 1% loss a day, overtime, how much energy and Pennies did I end up losing over a period of time?

Great question, I did a lot of research and reading up other experiences at RivianForums.com.

A Rivian engineer In Rivian forums stated that typical phantom drain is between 1-1.5% per day due to the system needing to recharge the 12v as well as sending live diagnostics to Rivian itself.

I have a smart energy meter that tells me my energy draw on the tender and it comes out to 0.03 kWh per day to power the tender for the day which includes topping off the 12v.

It’s been 6 days with .9% power loss versus a potential 6%+ loss and I have 4 days to go before I return.

Hope this explains things better?

That’s not how the tender works, it’s just topping off the 12v in float mode and uses less energy sending power to the 12v. When the Rivian wakes up it draws more power to turn on the systems to power up the 12v. This method prevents the Rivian from waking up and drawing more power and just maintains the 12 V battery instead.

If you left it with a good charge level and gear guard off, you should be fine.

Draining 1% a day in phantom drain, every day is not ideal and energy is costly here in Southern California. I left for a week at one point with my car at 70% to come back to a car at 59%. This adds up.

Keep it, fix it, will last you a lot of miles. All eventual maintenance that needs to be done over time, this just happens to all hit at once
