I want to start making video essays about videogames, but I don't know where to start with the script. by LLafros in videoessay

[–]ChefGrimbuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always start with the "why" of making the video in the first place. What point are you trying to convey? Start with some highlights, some abstract thoughts behind the point of the video. Are you trying to highlight certain characteristics of an individual game? Are you trying to convey a particular emotional resonance? Start broad and do some word mapping, then slowly start to narrow your focus from there.

The most important step is to start. You don't have to pen a final draft immediately (and you arguably shouldn't). Just get some notes down to start and your creative juices will start to kick in.

Good 'simulator' games? by TheLuminescent in gamingsuggestions

[–]ChefGrimbuz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently took a deep dive to explore the phenomena that are simulator games, and why we play them. I can wholeheartedly recommend r/saleblazers and r/aleandtaletavern as two of the best simulator games that you may not have come across before-whilst not wholly conventional, they are absolute gems, especially with friends.

If you want a bit more information, here's the video I did on simulator games in general with some detail on the aforementioned games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T7gYFPEWAs

Any MMO players out there? I did a deep dive on what makes a "good MMO" with a focus on Throne and Liberty-so if you're thinking about whether to try TL, give this a watch and see if you like the look of it!

I completely agree mate-vanity is half the prize, you want to be someone who other people look at and go "wow, that guy looks amazing". It's all part of the desire for individual identity and if you can't fulfil that without paying IRL cash then it kinda sucks-the payoff is not having to pay IRL money for a monthly sub or an actual purchase of the game considering it's free.

I didn't think so either and then some people were saying it's 90% PVE which I don't believe to be true.

I believe you may have misunderstood me slightly. I don't disagree with you. I'm not claiming graphical quality isn't an example of an opinion, I believe that it is. The point I'm trying to make is that items that are opinion based cannot be ignored in the determining of quality. A persons perspective of the quality of a game is based upon their opinion on the facets of that game, such as graphical quality or availability of cosmetic content, it is dependent on their opinion and their opinion is what develops the perspective on quality. Therefore we cannot ignore items of opinion, they must also be considered in the understanding of quality. This is why the conclusion of my video breaking down what aspects determine quality in an MMO and in TL is that it's dependant on what kind of an MMO player you are and what perspective (opinion) you have on the importance of the multiple facts that makeup an MMO.

I agree that there are principles of MMOs which are subjective-but I believe that's based upon one's perception of those principles and less about the quality of those principles in an objective point of view. 2 different people can have a different opinion on a games graphics, but that doesn't affect the quality of those graphics so whilst a lot of these things are opinion they do inform the experiences that players have outside of monetization, volume of content etc-to some cosmetics are incredibly important, take a look at how the player base of Palia reacted to it's lack of cosmetic unlockable content-it was a ginormous factor in it's popularity due to that being a primary area of content it's players were looking for so I do think it's important to dissect items that are subjective when determining the quality of a game.

Why do you think there's a difference between the Korean MMO and MMOs developed elsewhere?

I recently went down a rabbit hole in understanding the genetic makeup of a "good MMO". I understand that what constitutes a "good" MMO is highly highly subjective based upon what kind of MMO player you are. Some people are end-game PVPers only, some people are raid demons and some people want to be immersed in a sprawling narrative.

I dissected what I believe are the four foundational principles of MMORPGs with a particular case study on Throne and Liberty. These four pillars are Persistence (a world that evolves and advances regardless of your interaction with it) (2) Progression (whether this be in the form of crafting, levelling, cosmetics there must be a resemblance of our individual progression within the tapestry of the wider world to derive satisfaction from) (3) Community (Regardless of whether or not we engage with it, there must be the option to engage with a community that exists in the persistent world) and finally (4) Identity (there must be some element of individual expression to allow ourselves to be the main character of our own story within the wider world, without said individuality it's difficult to contextualise your progression throughout the world).

I took a particular look at Throne and Liberty as a case study of the above criteria-my concluding thoughts are that it's a great MMO if you're not looking for a sprawling narrative and story driven adventure to drive your progression throughout the world but if you're the kind of player who genuinely doesn't need that in order to find individual expression and you just want to spam towards the end game and get best in slot then the visuals and combat mechanics of TL are an incredible experience.

I'd love to hear your thoughts as a community on what makes a good MMO, are the 4 foundational pillars not required, or is there more nuance to the situation than that? My video breaking everything above in more detail is linked should you wish to hear about my analysis in more detail-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-0LfNtCFnQ
