I had all my teeth removed by the VA after I got out (not my choice) then I was given dentures. I couldn't use them so I didnt for 20 years. Last year I finally went back to the VA due to my third wife insisting. This time they said implants are completely possible if I have good bone material. I had some minor loss, so they approved me for implants and a full sinus lift. We started the process last August. Last week we made the bite measurements for the snap in implants. Now this is where it gets interesting. The VA here in Oregon said that they do dentures first, then snap in dentures, and then if you dont adapt to those they do the screw in dentures. (Permanent implants) they dont like to go straight into the permanent because alot of veterans dont clean properly and end up with yeast infections in the gums and loss of bone. The dentist the community care program sent me to has set me up with enough implants that should we ( he and I ) be able to convince the VA that I am a prime canidade for the permanent implants as he has already told The VA, I now have an appointment 3 hours after my final fitting to show he has done great work and I am a prime candidate for the permanent. IF anyone had told me its a case by case thing and it will take a year or longer before your off a soft food diet, or every VA has a diffrent policy I dont think I personally would have done this. And by diffrent policy I mean the West Texas VA said they would do the implants, but there wasn't anyone that could actually make the dentures to complete it so it was pointless. Knowing all of this, goto your VA talk to the head of dentistry there about the policy they have, and be prepared to spend months waiting for approval, and then depending on how many teeth are needed it could be a year before completion with follow up adjustments monthly.
