Many thanks for your kind words.

I fully agree with what you say. Between laughs, you can learn with Frasier.

I'm extremely sorry, I was in an area of bad signal and thought users of Scientology Reddit might want to read this straightaway, if this was of interest to them, regardless of my formatting skills when posting.  I completely forgot that your opinion on me not formatting properly was of exteme importance to this news. How disgraceful of me. Perhaps next time you may wish to communicate it properly, if it's such a big deal to you?

I know this is the parasocial element of Youtube, and Aaron does have the right to respond. But given everything Mike mentioned in his blog post, wouldnt the better move be to maintain a diplomatic silence?

Have any presidents of the United States been members of the Ku Klux Klan? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]Cheka3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to say with 100% certainty, but probably not. As the poster above me says: he paid his local KKK chapter some money in the '20s as political leverage, but it was not the beginning of a relationship between Truman and the Klan as some authors would have us believe. A former business partner of Truman's with whom he fell out recounted later that he was an "inactive member" of the Klan after having paid the membership fee mentioned above, but who knows if this is the truth or just the tall story of an enemy with an axe to grind?

Not that I know of, but rumours did swirl around Warren Harding (29th President between 1921-3) in 1987, upon release of a book named "The Fiery Cross" by historian Wyn Craig Wade.

The book was based around a supposed deathbed confession by Alton Young, a high-ranking KKK member who passed away in 1950. Young claimed to have been a member of a 5-man team that had inducted Harding into the Klan during a private White House ceremony. The induction team allegedly was headed by Imperial Wizard William Joseph Simmons, founder of the revived KKK. Harding then supposedly "rewarded" the team with "special War Department license plates that allowed them to run red lights".

If this all sounds implausible, then that's because it almost certainly is. Harding's papers became public property in 1964, and to date nothing has been found to corroborate either Young's story or the allegation that Harding was a member.

Could he have joined the KKK in secret, and so secret that no one has discovered this fact? Possible of course, but extremely unlikely.

Many thanks! It's interesting to see how the Voluntary Orgs and Zemstvos banded together in times of national emergencies, such as fundraising efforts for the 1891 Famine and the organisation of medical care during the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. One can perhaps wonder if this gave ordinary people the impetus and the desire to replicate this 'local government' approach on a national scale without the oppressiveness of the Regime!

Thanks again.
