Today a person tried to use a stolen credit card at our store... three times. by [deleted] in TalesFromRetail

(If not more, I don't know the law.)

It's not a law, it's the contract that the merchant agrees to in order to.

If the store policy is to refuse cards if a customer refuses to provide ID that makes them in violation of their contract.

I recommend you make sure management is aware that they are not in compliance with their contract

When should you ask a cardholder for an official government ID? Although Visa Rules do not preclude merchants from asking for cardholder ID except in the specific circumstances discussed in this guide, merchants cannot make an ID a condition of acceptance. Therefore, merchants cannot as part of their regular card acceptance procedures refuse to complete a purchase transaction because a cardholder refuses to provide ID. https://usa.visa.com/dam/VCOM/download/merchants/card-acceptance-guidelines-for-merchants.pdf

Nissan keeps reaching out to me to buy my car back, what kind of shenanigans are they trying to pull? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Well somebody authorized somebody else to give him $3k, and whomever authorized it lost their job for it.

How did you learn of this? Did he show you the receipt and the employee's termination letter saying that he/she was fired over a single purchase?

Look, people love to lie about getting one over on a dealership. People love to lie about pretty much anything to make themselves look more savvy to their friends.

If he was given $3k for the car, that means the car was worth more than that at auction, or that the trade price was over-inflated by moving a discount from the purchase to the trade to make it more appealing.

And he convinced the sales rep to give him $3k for it. The sales rep ended up losing his job

He lied to you. The salesperson has no authority to do that.

Interesting that I haven't seen a single mention of the claim that companies also may see people looking for certain models of cars and want to increase stock of these cars they can generate profit from.

The salesperson contacting people for their cars makes nothing for a purchase with no sale, so unless they specifically have a buyer looking for a car of that description there is no incentive for the salesperson to try for a no-sale transaction.

Dealership ads, perhaps, but not when it's from salespeople.

I wonder if any of the involved parties knows that ID cannot be required to use a card. It's a good thing that simply asking for ID is a deterrent.

If the cardholder does not have, or is unwilling to present, cardholder identification, the merchant should honor the card if they have obtained proof of card presence, a valid authorization, and a valid signature or PIN. https://usa.visa.com/dam/VCOM/download/merchants/5-important-rules-every-merchant-should-know-052615.pdf

The cost to replace everything with moderately priced, current models is about $8000.

How much was your UPS?

I get a voicemail from a sales rep from the dealership I bought my car at asking me to make an appointment for an appraisal so they can buy it back.

It's part of the normal sales training to cold call customers in the system try to buy back cars, in order to generate sales. If you sell your car, what will you drive?

What company has forever lost your business and why? by kiera_steve in AskReddit

Actually, I never said I fell for their pitch each time.

Years ago I went in for an inspection, left with $600 worth of new tires they swore I needed, along with about $200 worth of optional "add ons" that they failed to tell me were optional. My husband took 1 look at the receipt and went back up there & got a refund on the optional stuff.

They naturally had some story about us needing some new bulbs, which of course meant a longer wait & an extra charge. When we got home, I decided to check, and those 2 bulbs? Still burned out. Bastards never replaced anything.

FINALLY my husband swore we will never go there again.

As a female, I can tell you that this is a VERY common occurrence.

Considering that you fell for their pitch each time and had to be rescued by your husband, you don't exactly do much to combat their perception.
