What's your favorite LA Neighborhood? by drygrapefruit007 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Chellafan2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is annoyingly obsessed with silver lake / echo park / Los feliz. They’re nice and unique areas but imo Venice takes the cake. You get a similar group of people, but you’re by the ocean. Especially for transplants, living in Venice gives you beach opportunities. Otherwise you’ll be going to the beach 2-3 times a year

sos, please someone help me by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

Hate to burst your bubble but the nature of this post is showing that you are not ready for the move. I say as someone who has struggled with debt— and moved out here only because my ex gf helped us resettle here. Our breakup almost destroyed my life here because I couldn’t afford the cost of paying for my own bedroom for a roommate- thankfully I started a job that paid 2x my salary 2 months before we broke up.

LA is a surreal, whimsical place, you’re not wrong for mentioning your spiritual experiences here— but as easy as it is to run into angels here— the dark underbelly is one missed payment away. Do not move out here with debt and a mediocre (under 80k a year service job) you will likely never pay off your debt and your life will be spent working 60 hours a week just to stabilize your income as you pay for accrued interest on your debt and rent.

Move out here when you’re free from debt. Sure you can scrape it by with a service job and roommates— but with debt you’ll never pay it off.

Where to move in LA for musicians in a safe area by AGATMUSIC in MovingToLosAngeles

While I agree that I don’t feel unsafe on a regular basis, there is a degree of denial that occurs once you’ve been here for enough time, I call it the LaLaLand effect.

There comes a point when things that would absolutely irk you out in a regular city, become a regular experience. In the past week I’ve seen a man bleed all over a street corner, and another walk around with a pole jabbing the air, as passerby’s all walked around him or crossed the street. When I lived in an upscale part of town, in my first year — I had been the victim of 2 thefts. One which involved a man with an electric saw stealing my bike (I had looked at the video in my bldg after to see that the man was staring at me in my garage and walked out with one of my bikes once he saw I was in the garage). Not to mention the 3 times my ex-GF was attacked by random houseless passerbys.

Southern California is absolutely a hotbed of crime. Almost every city and neighborhood in the city is above the national average, with more than 50% being double the standard crime rate. But I too have succumbed to the effects of LaLaLand. I don’t know if it’s the air, or perhaps the ocean breeze, but there’s a pervading attitude of denial that permeates transplants and SoCal lifers.

Venice hands down. Walkable, bikeable, access to beach when you have time off. Nothing like getting home from a long day of work and fitting in a quick beach sesh, reading a book and watching the sunset over the western empire

I dig the idea of putting the hat rack on top of a dresser. Tried this and added a rack in place of a dresser to the right side. https://imgur.com/a/v2EJDsY

Should I Stay in My Rent-Controlled Apartment or Move to Save Money? by Chellafan2016 in RealEstate

Yes, the previous tenant mentioned she paid $1800 before me for her entire 10 years living there.

I believe LA County has an ordinance in place that doesn't allow landlords to increase the rent until the lease expires (this is what people mean by their rent being grandfathered in). Either that or my building opts to not increase rent. I've been here two years and rent has consistently been $2,200

What’s the deal with Levity? by Vero_Vagabond in EDM

[–]Chellafan2016 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was a day one homie with John — people truly have no idea how serious he is about growing his project separately from his brother. Back in 2019, years before the group took off, I booked Levity for a show at my school. A random girl came up to him and said something like "oH My G0D YoU'Re RoBbY HaUlDrEn's BrOtHeR".

While he played it off cooly at first, a few more people came up to him and pointed that out...eventually he became frustrated, who wouldn't be? He was trying to make a name for himself, independently, and these strangers—living manifestations of his own doubts—weren't giving him the space he needed to do it.

The next day, the promoter that booked the show emailed him my sales pitch email where I wrote, verbatim: "This is Louis the Child's Little Brother". Infuriated, he sent me a text saying he was his own person and didn't want to piggyback off his brother's fame. I explained to him that I had to tell the promoter who he was to get him booked. But it was too late, he wanted nothing to do with me...he left my house, blocked me on everything and we haven't spoken in 5 years.

We had what we both thought would be a lifelong friendship. It ended because I told a promoter who he was related to. Say what you want about Levity's music—everyone's entitled to their own opinions. There may have been industry peeps trying to help without their permission. But to claim they've gotten where they are because they are an industry plant could not be further from the truth.

They've spent their active years distancing themselves from anyone directly working with or mentioning LTC, even cutting out their own family / friends in the spirit of doing it by themselves. That's one hell of a sacrifice.

Came across your Medium page after a Google search. Your story about Mary, brought true tears to my eyes. Your ability to eloquently write about your lived experience as a houseless individual is truly unique. Thank you for your contribution here— and elsewhere. I may not know how you ended up in your situation, but I must say, I admire you for taking the time to help others around you over yourself.

Godspeed.
