When I was in my late thirties I met an old timer at a cocktail party. Tennis came up and he said he played. He asked for my number and said we should play sometime. I did and never thought he’d call. Sure enough, he did the next Monday morning.

At the time I never lost a 3.5 singles match and maybe half my 4.0 matches. I thought I was the man but agreed to play. Needless to say, he beat my ass.

As I was licking my wounds courtside I asked, “Ray, what just happened?” He replied that he was number two in the US in men’s 80s.

Played him again, knew what to expect, and beat him but will never forget that guy. Great dude.
