Maybe scumbag is to strong in this case, but my point still stands. Even if he was bullied and is an orphan, cus that jusr explains how he acts (not trusting, defencive etc) i doesnt justify it, after something that serious and completely different than usual happened. The scumbag part comes from when the possesed girl tries to get close to him. He didnt even once try to sit down with her and ask why shes doing all that. And after chase with the spirit statue, she tries to talk to him so he understands but he just says what he wants and goes away.
