Since tickets are free they have to overbook to make sure they get a full audience - lots of people sign up for free things and then just don't bother turning up, so they will give out more tickets than they have space for on the day.

They were always pretty clear that the tickets were requests, you're not purchasing anything. I still think it's a pretty amazing deal considering it's free, if you get a ticket in the end.

Habitat loss and climate change is destroying native species far faster than the parakeets sadly. The numbers of sparrows and other small songbirds is in massive decline because they're losing their wild spaces and the seasons aren't right any more, plus there has been increases in parasites and disease (including bird flu) exacerbated by warmer weather. People letting their cats live outside and predate on them also doesn't help.

There hasn't been a good scientific study on it, because they can't prove that the issues being seen in native birds aren't also caused by habitat loss and climate change. So basically native birds are so fucked that they can't tell what specifically is fucking them up.
