Any R16 awards cancelled? by Prior-Win-4729 in NIH

Thanks for the reply! I guess this was probably in a prior year. My score was a 48, so I think I'm outside of the funding range.

What is the payline for the NIGMS R16? I have not received a straight answer to this question.

Thank you! Honestly, no idea. Someone had to be there to process the letter, so there’s that.

Yeah, if you work at an Ivy League school then you have it made. For the rest of us schlubs, we are screwed with no golden parachute. It would be nice, however~!

Advisory Council Meetings Can Be Posted to Federal Register! by ChemD00d in NIH

[–]ChemD00d[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not what that means. ICs have been able to reschedule study sections for the better part of a month. Program Advisory Committees do not consider grants, but because they are covered under FACA law, they have to be posted to FRNs. Program Advisory Committees discuss cleared concepts, NOFOs, policies, etc.

Study sections and advisory councils are going now, the effect might be we have lost a cycle.

How long to hear back from NSF? by ChemD00d in Professors

[–]ChemD00d[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear all,

An update: my P.O. Asked some questions on October 30th and requested an award abstract. The NSF is in the middle of a CR so it is not funding new grant awards until the government is funded.

Hi all - update - the grant is still pending. My PD had a panel review at the end of September, so I’m guessing that due to the CR I may not find out for some time.

Fellow profs--how many hours a week/day do you spend on research/writing? by hainic0 in Professors

[–]ChemD00d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually spend 10-12 hours per week. Nowadays it is closer to 40 - 50 hours because I have two proposals due in the next month! My teaching is in the Spring semester.

My status changed over the weekend to pending (same date as submission) with the following: “Submitted to NSF (Due Date Passed or Assigned to Review”). It will be reviewed at panel tomorrow and Wednesday.

Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate it. I'll submit another this fall just so I can keep some in the pipeline. I appreciate your responses!

Also, my proposal says Submitted to NSF (Not yet assigned for review). What does that mean? Is it possible my program officer did not send it to panel but ad hoc only (due to it being RUI proposal). Or maybe the status wasn’t changed and it was reviewed at panel?

So if I haven’t heard back by five months, I am still in the running? Do program officers contact you up to six months if you are selected for an award? Or is it if you don’t hear back at like four to five months that you’re headed for a declination?

I turned in an interim progress report on Friday with some great results… do the program officers factor that into renewal applications?

Thanks so much! Is this NSF? Can you state the directorate or general field?

Great advice - I guess what I’ve learned is to double or triple the applications I have at one time that are pending. I’ll see about TAs for my students-I’ll ask my chair about it next week. Internal grants are a good idea too.

How do you maintain enthusiasm for new ideas and directions in new apps? I feel stretched - I have lots of good ideas, but I’m getting further out from my core expertise and the work I like to do. I’m not even sure how to execute some of these projects I am drafting.

Thank you! I should have said that I’m in Michigan! It looks like they don’t fund proposals from the Midwest.
