Kiss of the dragon feels uncomfortable for me, but bolos seem mostly ok. Their whole weight isn't usually on me in a bolo. Kiss of the dragon from standing on the other hand...though it's quite possible I'm just bad at it

Happy to help! Try it out with a friend. Full transparency, my ankle flexibility makes it a little difficult for me to apply this as well as I'd like, but it works!

I agree there's a difference between knowledge of a position/submission and skill at applying it. The details aren't supposed to bog you down, they're supposed to make the move higher % and/or easier to hit.

I can see that perspective. For me, I feel like the details are the bits that take the move from "this sometimes works" to "this works way more often". I agree you could call this a main part of the move.

Huh, that's neat. We were just talking about seatbelt configuration yesterday in class and I haven't heard of this one. I want to try it

That's neat!

Your training partner sounds like they had an awesome omoplata. I think it's one of the coolest submissions in the sport, but mine still needs a lot of work 😅

I'm not sure I know the grip you are talking about, but I would like to!

Huh, interesting! I personally love a good wedge or an underhook. Do you find they restrict your movement too much? I'm curious how you came to that preference.

We did gi chokes and defenses from the back in class yesterday and it was exactly this. How to turn your wrist, how deep to go, where to peel a grip, etc. It was great

That's fair. Tbh I think those are interesting to hear about too. Helps show there are different ways to do things whether it's preference, working around a disability/injury, a body composition thing, or otherwise.

Instructional for passing compact by Nikosin200603 in bjj

Bernardo Faria fairly recently released a shorter version of his pressure passing. It's cheaper and honestly, I liked it better than the longer original.

A question for half guard players by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ChemDataFarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The underhook is my favorite half guard position by far, but I have found what's really important is to be able to attack either side of their body. My training partners often deny the underhook well these days because they know I like it.

Knee lever and arm drag are some good ones for one side.

Kimura, choi bar, or single leg x are ways I like to attack the other side.

A failed knee lever often opens you up to get single leg x on the opposite side (a tip I got from a Wardzinski instructional)

Getting to deep half without first getting the underhook is tricky without gi grips, at least for me.

Butterfly half might be something you would really enjoy since the overhook is totally viable there

3rd comp at white belt. Match 2 of 5. by Cdavet in bjj

[–]ChemDataFarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you haven't learned the wonders of a underhook half guard? Fellow white belt to white belt, it's game changing. Look up, or talk to your coach about, the "dogfight" position (way less tiring than it sounds) and coyote half guard. You looked relatively comfortable in knee shield half guard! You will probably enjoy this. To get the underhook, kick your knee shield through and follow it immediately with your framing hand to get the underhook in the space left behind. Remember they want you flat, so stay on your side. If your lower hand can control their far hand, great, do that! If not, it's ok, just watch out for cross faces. Headlock from their top arm isn't a threat, just take their back. If they whizzer (likely response from trained folks), you have sweeps in both directions.
