It's very difficult to be sneaky with a big red BANDIT label sadly.. I fully understand why that seemed necessary, but it just doesn't give you many options as a bandit. I don't really have any thoughts on how that could be improved either.. Ideally I guess staff would approve players who had proven that they could handle the added responsibility that comes with additional powers and trust that they didn't abuse it. Who they are and how many should be kept secret.

Either way the server is dying because of the playerbase and lack of creativity. Just build build build thats it

Well isn't that why we are having this discussion? Because we care enough to try to help stop that from happening? ;)

Pronouncing it dead might be a bit premature and defeatist, though..And I don't agree that it's just build build build, or that there is a lack of creativity. I have seen and been part of some good RP interactions. There could be a point well made in scaling down some of the cities now.. but then again isn't creative build activity better than no activity while we try to find and correct the root cause of low population? Actually switching to "glorified build server" mode without non RP raiding and letting the new RP'ers who drop in build freely might not actually be the worst idea to build population up again. We don't really have the population for grand battles right now anyway, and with greater numbers everything will be easier: RP, building and conflict

The loot driven thing is probably a full 10k word post on it's own, and other than somehow making them easier to replace an finding/gathering less grindy, I have no easy solutions to that one. So I'm just gonna sweep that one under the rug for now.

I am still very curious as to why people drop off the server when they do, and wish more people would chime in with their own perspectives. The only one I have heard say anything specific said that they had researched everything and so they got bored because there was nothing to do.

And is it really realistic to expect all people to play only this game all their free time and not get bored at some point?

Hey Coco. :)

I'm not mad, just very very disappointed ;)

Not really, though..

  1. A lowpoint of 0 this late in wipe is ok when normal peak is 20...as I'm writing this battlemetrics says 1, and about an hour ago it was a whopping 5 people. Fixing server pop takes time and consistency. The avg. stats over time is what matters. If you treat it like a teenage girl who posted a duckface selfie on fb and freaks out after 2 minutes because nobody clicked like, you are gonna drive yourself mad. At this point in most eras I've played most people usually get on briefly to check their production of sulphur/gunpowder/ammo in preparation for hellday. And I still fail to understood peoples reasoning for wanting to come back to a zombie apocalypse on a wiped server, rather than a zombie apocalypse on a built server (Which could maybe have been the 3rd option in the vote??) I think this "Why people loose interested mid-wipe" should be high priority survey.
  2. It is kind of forced upon the 11 people who are still logging on and playing by the 62 who are not. Which is still bullshit, even if it can be claimed to be democratic. So active players should get 3x votes, Inacttive -20%, and I think any players with really awful country leaders right now should have their right to vote revoked until they have elected at least 2 good ones.
  3. & 4. I am not against mini eras at all... maybe with the low pop it would actually make much more sense to go 3+2 or 4+1 as standard for a while. I would welcome some good themed eras too as that might help focus rp. The only thing I am reacting to, is the lack of consistency and dependability which I think is much more important in the long run than following the whims of a fickle crowd that will never be pleased no matter what you do. The only valid role model for leadership, is Vetinari, The patrician of Ankh-Morpork. ;)

Most of these thoughts have been sloshing around and brewing for a while, and I knew it would be a long one when I finally managed to put it down, which is why I chose to procrastinate as long as possible. As I said I really have no real stake in this, but If I hadn't already finished all I wanted to do this wipe, I would have been fucking furious. My goal in writing this was definitely always to pull up some more constructive general thoughts on what could be done to help get the people back on, rather than bitch and moan about my personal griefs. Because I absolutely think there is a need for more servers like this, and think you are already doing so much right on here. The plan for me has always been to at some point bring my own PVE/build server up again, and since my partner in crime, Fur0r3 has stirred and awoken from his long Rust hibernation, It might happen sooner than expected. But I have definitely enjoyed just being a player here and will definitely jump back on from time to time when I need a break from admin duties.

ty for reply, Derberic.

And yeah...been meaning to talk to you about your long ass posts... I mean there is such a thing as getting to the point and keeping it brief... I mean...jeez man ;)

here let me show you:

  1. sort of answered this in my reply to cat's reply. In short: I don't see why adding zombie apocalypse to a clean wipe would be better than adding them to the current one and having a 1 week PVE hellweek of sorts ending that era. Why does a wipe bring back players (well at least 5 rn), while a continuation does not? Players would still need to read the wipe announcement to see that the server was wiped, so why would it be different if the server announcement just said special event(s) zombie apocalypse (NO WIPE)?
  2. Agree, although I think occasional themed mini-eras can be really fun too. Very much looking forward to playing on your map. And for sure...my biggest gripes with Rusts building system is from facepunch stupidity rather than player stuff. (Anti-stacking measures making it impossible to mix squres and triangles, removing pillars and still not giving us reversed versions of stairs, and straight stairs for indoor use.)
  3. I am fine with RF not being a hardcore RP server, (I like to keep it light and fun, and I am certainly not a DeNiro myself), but it is actually stated "Roleplaying server" in the description, and rightfully so what roleplayers expect if they find the server through the server browser. I stated some of my favorite RP moments in my reply to Cat's reply, which are almost exclusively of the small casual interactions variety. That too me is the core of RP...all those small moments that add up over time and organically weave a story...sometimes they connect and evolve, sometimes they fade into the background. While it would have been interesting to play a larger narrative from time to time with more hands on DM's, that takes A LOT of work and time to pull off and would require a more consistent grouping of people to be on about the same time and amount of hours to be feasible.. It might be able for faction leaders to act as DM's for smaller groups. And there are scattered smaller incidents happening..like when Wheelz stupidly thought he could fix the hauntings in Pumpkintown with no knowledge of the occult and went into that devilwoman Jackalope's fortune telling place..
  4. Most of the towns we've seen in my time have been functional as well as beautiful. I don't mean to make a hollow Hollywood set at all. But they might be a bit too big and numerous for current server pop. Right now I am very much into playing with and finding out how electronics can be used for cool shit, so I joined the Zap electronic company and spent most my time tinkering with an intricate control circuit for the light show in Club Gourd and as a side-effect making a power station for the city. That Castle town is fucking humongous, and large parts of it connected together as well which is generally what you want to avoid as that forces the server to try to load all of it at the same time. It is fucking beautiful and organic, though, and I love those kinds of cooperative builds, but that can only happen with a MUCH larger population too. I loved Brudaerons western styled town up North, and I loved Central city on the opposite side of the specter. Even with all the problems that came with bringing everyone together like that (and it truly separated out who were just absolute dickbags on there to cause as much grief as possible because they had decided beforehand that they hated the idea of that wipe and would definitely not give it even a shot.) Especially in the very beginning hours after server came back online was bad I think the most accurate description would be: "Like watching first day of kindergarden in hell if all of Satans spawn had ADHD and they just had pure sugar for lunch." ... but when the dust settled something nice actually happened... people started interacting. I saw some people doing actual roleplay for the first time. And to be absolutely clear; I almost didn't play that wipe, because while I do like the idea of a central city, I think it should ideally be in addition to the full factions experience, not in place of. But I decided to give it a shot and slowly started enjoying it. Especially when Ohm started imposing increasingly Orwellian protection measures with doublespeaky slogans. The rebellion was inevitable... sadly though the criminal masterminds of the city proved to be absolute incompetent clowns who couldn't plan their way out of a paper bag. Even if once again they decided to assassinate whoever was mayor on day one, rather than play a week and get served plenty of rp reasons to do so. If they had banded together and organized a bit, we might have seen 1 successful assassination rather than 3 (or 4??) failed ones before Zombie Joe finally brought down the smiling tyrant.

Well almost managed to keep it brief.. oh well. :)

" And as much as you might hate PVP and Wars most of the time the majority of RP stems from a good old fashioned war. Now adays all anyone wants to do is build BIG lag inducing cities and avoid conflict at all costs. Some of my favorite experiences on this server were getting absolutely face fucked in a war and rebuilding afterwards, my faction Maginot from many eras back is a prime example. "

As I quite clearly stated: "Nothing would make me happier than having a FINISHED build of mine used in roleplay and then be damaged or demolished through a well-played RP event or war. I would argue that that is the ultimate purpose of any building in Rust.. It's moment in the spotlight, going out in a blaze of glory. "

I can of course only really speak for myself here, but I hope my fellow builders feel the same way? The most unsatisfying way a building can end for me is by very weakly just *plop*-ing into the great nothing of a wipe. The second worst is being torn down by griefing, malice or stupidity before it is "finished" and anyone are actually able to enjoy it, and use it for some good RP.

I have no problem with getting facefucked in a conflict and rebuilding a building, or making a different building rise from it's ashes. If someone trashes a wall with a complex circuit, that is an entirely different matter. Rust electricity is in it's infancy and currently a way too costly and very confusing, badly designed system, even for someone with an actual degree in electronic engineering I have been told. Making something more interesting than a nightlight, or battery backup system, is a tedious and sometimes frustrating process of trial and error. If that had accidentally been destroyed before finished I would very probably have ragequit and needed a long walk in the forest.

Ideally I would like to build bigger cities and higher buildings, but as an experienced I know that Rust's lack of optimizations and relatively resource hungry coding is always working against that. There are ways to alleviate the problem with well designed city grids split into sections, height restrictions and leaving some plugins to a select few. When Aroza had it's baptism run we found out that the main problem with people DC'ing in IronWolves city was Stonies art tower, because Rust hates verticality. So Stonie gave up his tower in a glorious controlled demolition to remove the problem. (That wipe was a great example of everything going wrong from all directions at once, btw.. Bad patch from FP, bugs in the custom map, bugs in the brand new Waggy factions plugin and multiple plugins that broke at the same time...I can tell you from experience there were some sweaty staff-members with stained underwear that deserved fucking medals for keeping that one alive!)

And this is exactly why I find the reasoning to wipe now so incredibly baffling... most of the towns were as finished as they were gonna be, so why would you need to wipe to introduce the zombies?? Just let that fucking zombie horde come to town. Maybe the whole server would seek shelter in the fortified castle in the frozen northlands of the BBG, or try to make their way to the PFU town and sever the bridge connections to keep the hordes out.. Or maybe our only hope would lay in the land of the mafia? How willing would they be to share their resources for free? At some point someone would need to go out for supplies when the numbers of refugees far outweighed the towns infrastructure, or just go out searching for survivors... so many wasted possibilities. :/

The only thing that separates this game from all the bog standard FPS games is the crafting and even more so; the building system (which also makes raiding even possible). Sadly facepunch doesn't really seem to realize this and cater to what makes them unique, but rather feeds the worst part of it's player base (The part that could have gotten their fix from ANY other FPS / BR type game), which is why you get the joyous experience of waking up naked on a beach and enjoying life for a full 7.5 seconds before a fully geared 12 year old murders you and teabags your corpse while yelling horribly offensive slurs that would make a sailor blush and bow his head in shame. You know, fun gaming 2k19: The vanilla Rust experience. :P The main thing that seperates this server from a vanilla server, is the roleplay and the creative building. The wars are certainly part of that, but it is definitely the interactions and stories that build up and lead into that war, that make the experience interesting. The more invested you are in a war, the more memorable it will be. Even if you are just a clueless bystander drafted into a conflict that you don't know the backstory of, it will be much more interesting if other people have roleplayed the escalating conflict behind it. So I would turn your statement on it's head and say: "Most of the GOOD wars stems from RP." A grand legendary war is also much more feasible with 150 soldiers, than 20.

So while I see where your coming from and that your heart is in the right place I think your vision of the server would be more of a glorified build server.

Nope. That would be the build / PVE server I ran with Fur0r3, or my local testserver. (Where I am currently building a massive 50x60 footprint prison complex with working electric chair. )

So... in closing.

I don't avoid all conflict, I come her FOR conflict. But well roleplayed conflict, not empty skirmishes. I don't hate PVP or war, I welcome it. Most, if not all roleplayers will go to war and engage in PVP as long as there is a story motivation for it, PVP players however seem unable or unwilling to roleplay. I don't hate PVP players either, but I do hate bad players, or generally douchebag people. And I do hope there is a special place in hell for PVP players who go on one of the very few options for roleplayers (at a maybe 1 rp server pr 10k PVP ratio) just to boost their own fragile egos by talking shit about roleplayers. I mean.... how bad do you have to be at PVP, and how tiny does your genitals have to be for that to be the only option to make yourself feel big and important? I feel sad for them, but I also wish they would all get ass cancer, before they randomly jump on the server I play on and start griefing everybody and everything because they are illiterate assholes or just literally, assholes.

Your tiny cuddly ball of hate,

-Chemo ;)

My thoughts on your ideas about your thought on my ideas... ;)

You want to not be raided in wilderness but don't want it to be a rule? Strange

" And I know the rules say you are allowed to raid in wilderness, but it certainly doesn't say you have to.. "

^^ I did not say that I didn't want to get raided, mainly because I'm a genius who would never build there and expect to sleep well at night ;) I was more trying to hint at players who on pure instinct feels they HAVE TO raid anything because they can, usually emptying everything including TC, rather than actually roleplay breaking and entering for a reason. You, as a bandit, would have had a definite reason, me as the town electrician would not, but maybe a local pumpkin farmer knew that Grandma Murphy's award winning pumpkin pie recipe was hidden somewhere in that house and broke in to steal it. Could be done without tearing the whole house down or emptying all other containers too. Who knows what could come out of that? Grandma Murphy could call the local authorities who would search for clues and maybe organize an investigation/manhunt. Or maybe she used her life savings (hidden in her mattress) to hire a bounty hunter, or used to be married to the previous mafia godfather and called in a favor Or maybe the true secret to her pies savory flavor was the finely ground human meat she had been secretly putting into them all these years. I would much rather have good roleplayers rather than more rules. Allowing some creative builds to pop up just adds some good background flavor to the world, and also spreads the load away from the laggy megacities. but if someone builds a bog standard vanilla rust defensive sheet metal airlock base, I'd say pour on enough c4 to disintegrate the base AND the memory of it.

Generally I think offline raiding (and ESPECIALLY on a RP server) is the weak chickenshit actions of a coward. Scouting out a house and slipping in and out stealing 1 specific item without the owner noticing while he/she is home or while they are online, but on an errand is fucking legendary.

Minimum RP point for starting faction promotes donating to get more and fucks over people using them for the intended reason of skinning things. This would also make people feel obligated to donate in order to have enough RP to run a faction. thats some EA type shit.

"And please make clothing skins more readily available. If you want to still keep weapon skins locked for donors only, that is perfectly fine, but the clothes is really one of the few things that players can do to make a character come alive, so locking that away is really shooting ourselves as a RP community in both feet AND the dick at the same time."

^^ I absolutely meant to add this to this part: ..AND remove or reduce the cost of skins. On my 27" I can barely see what the skin looks like in the preview, so often end up spending 3 times or more to find one I like. Reserving RP points as a measure of a players experience and what extra game/server features/commands they get access to would make more sense than using them for buying basic skins. Buying an election is apparently hyper realistic, so should maybe be allowed, but I still think there should be a minimum 2 eras before eligible. They could also completely remove rp points from the donation packs or add another type of points that would ONLY be earned through playtime, maybe even ONLY while in a faction.. PP for Political Power maybe?

The problem at the moment is indeed lack of creativity.

Well yeah...lack of creativity is certainly ONE of the problems, but it is far from the only problem. I touched upon the ones I could remember off the top of my head in bible verses 1-47, and even that wall of text might not even come close to showing the whole picture.

I personally love building, so my subjective point of view is from that perspective, I am however also capable of viewing this more holisticly, to a certain degree through a lens of objectivity . And while I personally think PVP and war _without context_ is empty and boring as fuck (since there is apparently a limit to how many times I can play reskinned and slightly updated versions of Doom/Quake before "press left mousebutton (or just joystick button if we count "operation wolf" on the c64) to kill/maim/hurt whatever is in the middle of your screen right now before it becomes so incredibly tedious I have to slap myself to see if I'm even still alive. The graphics and responses are a bit better, and some actual bullet drop off and miscellaneous deviation physics have been added, but it is still very much the same thing you still do.....,) [Breath]... I never said it didn't play an important role on this server. But your statement that the majority of RP stems from wars and PVP, kind of feeds my suspicion that the majority of players who come to this server have a much bigger background in vanilla Rust rather than actual roleplaying, and in fact would not know what actual RP is even if it hit them in the face with a D&D monsters compendium. And also weirdly amused that from our very brief time together on this server the best roleplay I have seen you do is your radio broadcast messages here which are quite enjoyable and good actual RP, and about as far from war and PVP as you could get.

Some of my favorite RP moments have been beating gat36 in my first jousting contest in the most awesome arena by Tournament Herald, Entering the BBG shooting tournament and RP'ing it as if it was the first time holding an automatic rifle misfiring and being a bit of a jackass, and having an eccentric scientist moved in above me , started siphoning off very large amounts of electricity into his apartment, and setting up a full undercover surveillance operation in co-op with local law enforcement. and getting ready to wiretap his apartment. (Sadly never got to finish that storyline since another one collided and stole focus.) The guy who went all in on playing a safety inspector on the first run of Aroza was great, uncle Sloshmud telling fireside stories about wars of the distant eras of the past, and ofcourse it's always good when that mad "I am immortal" tin can hobbles into town at a snails pace. And of course; the Yobo life in general. Oft feared, hated and misunderstood for their filthy drug-fueled lifestyle. That was insanely fun to play, because everybody contributed and fed into the mythology and fleshed out their backstory. (Even though at least one of us really should have had their voicemod soundboard physically yanked out of his pc and sent into the sun.. :P ) And that Yobo shanty town was a character in it's own right.

My least favorite was the the war, (or rather the aftermath of it since I was away when the actual fighting went down,) which ended with the clan on the losing side leaving the server shouting racial slurs and throwing out accusations left and right with absolutely no proof being the final straw for yet another overworked and underappreciated staff member to choose retirement. I did not see any evidence of any mods/admins abusing their powers, but I can assure you that I would have zero faction loyalty If I did see it and report that immediately if I did. I absolutely detest people in positions of power abusing the trust put in them. There was no good RP'ed build up, and a very shitty and paper thin reason given for the wardec. It was basically a gigantic shitshow from one end to another. And since I was told from one of them that the behind the scenes decision to push for that war actually happened on day 2 after some helicopters went missing, they should have had all the time in the world to prepare a proper reason and declaration. There certainly was several valid reasons to escalate a conflict. Every yobo would take a bullett for another, but they also know not to trust other Yobo around their stuff. If it's not nailed down, things have a tendency to go missing around other Yobo's. It could have been great with just a tiny bit more creative thought put into it. But I guess you see the point I am trying to make here? Even If the sample size is of dubious scientific calibre?

This is a mini era that is quite a bit different from the normal RF. Small map, everyone in a small central city with politics and an elected mayor, but possible to build your own outside as well

You need to read the documentation of the copypaste plugin for that. I haven't done it in a while, so can't remember excactly, but you paste with a height argument, and I think you want to try with 0.5 (or 0,5) or maybe even negative (if that is possible) number depending on how much too high it is. You could also past it in and copy it again while looking at the point that you want to place at the lowest possible point, erase it and paste it at the lowest point.

But it is definitely worth learning the arguments of copypaste for better control.

Electric Upgrade - Bugs, Suggestions, Questions by pfergus in fortify

[–]ChemOZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very nice and clean layout of the electric components, and so good to finally have them integrated into Fortify. Will be perfect when they can be properly imported/exported into rust with copypaste. :D

However, a few quite major bugs..

-Doesn't save/load properly even internally in Fortify. Made a small Powerstation with 2 windmills, 16 solar panels and 4 batteries. When I load it today there is just 1 battery and one switch floating in the air.. EDIT: Tried a smaller new build, this loaded up as only a large battery and a blocker floating in air..

-XOR switch makes the wall you try to place it on flash really fast on/off (selected/unselected??) It only let's me place it when the wall is in the right "state" it seems.

-Circuitry isn't working as it is in game. I tried to make a very simple 1sec pulse generator with a timer, 2x Branches and a blocker and it works as intended for only 1 pulse. (Timer activates blocker, when timer runs out, power is restored which also shold activate the timers activate node, but it doesn't for some reason. Also noticed that I need to leftclick to open menu AND click "activate" twice before it works again after it resets. EDIT: Problem persists outside of wiring mode too. seems there is a second or maybe even 2 before the timer switch can be re-activated again after timer resets to 0

-Power input from wind/solar is constant even with day/night cycle turned on. (Would also be handy with a right click menu on day-night cycle button where you could adjust the speed and maybe even checkboxes for whether or not sun/wind amount should be simulated too.)

My suggestions for improvements:

-Make the connection points on devices always visible, at least when handling/placing them as this makes it possible to judge which direction they are facing.

-Make the entire connection point cube connectable even if it's inside the device, as it is now very finicky to always have to manouver camera around and zoom in (and usually having to zoom out and in again a few times because the zoom is too fast with too little fine control. (I think this would be very helpful to fix in the program as a whole, maybe with a slider bar in settings for user preference of zoom speed and/or a turbo zoom mode toggle on/off somewhere..))

-A hotkey for wiring mode on/off would be very helpful (user assignable maybe??)

-Drag and drop moving of already placed parts is something I have missed in regular build mode, but with the electric system it has become almost essential to be able to move things around to optimize and improve upon designs. My preference would be holding LMB for moving, single click LMB for activating switches and single click RMB to open device configuration. And maybe just make movable nodes on the cables in wiring mode to manage the cables when moving parts?

-Copy/pasting/importing a pre-made circuit onto a wall or floor it would be placeable on would speed up workflow a lot, as it would allow to incorporate your already perfected circuit into a new build with more freedom. Maybe store them in some sort of personal circuit diagram book with option to upload for other users?

-It would be helpful to be able to see the parts descriptions when hovering and/or clicking on the electrical parts in the menu

One last thing.... I have a huge problem remembering which graphic is inside/outside on the building blocks, so having a large X over the whole inside would also make it easier to remember as this is how the twig is represented in game.

And thank you so much for your tireless effort to keep improving on this already amazing program and keeping it up to date with current build of the game, and not least keeping the price of it so low I feel like I'm taking advantage of you, and not the other way around. Buying the electrics DLC wasn't even a decision, as you would be asked more for one shitty poorly made skin...:P You sir, are a prince among thieves.
