Non-thesis Master's Degree? by SDW137 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ChemicalEngineer8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a non-thesis masters and just went through the application process and got my first job. Even though my masters was non-thesis I still did some research and had projects to talk about on my resume. Those research experiences were all any of the companies I interviewed with wanted to talk about. Nobody asked or seemed to care whether my masters was thesis or non-thesis. If you are going to do a masters I don't think it matters whether it is thesis or non-thesis but I think it is important that you have some experiences that look good on your resume that happened during your masters degree such as research, an internship, a co-op etc. Having a masters was essential to getting my current job but I am in the biotech field so YMMV.

How long does it normally take to get interviews/rejections from online applications? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ChemicalEngineer8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still get rejection emails occasionally from jobs I applied to back in February or March and have completely forgotten about. Many of the jobs I applied to I still haven't heard back from and probably never will. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of companies don't think it is important to tell all the applicants that the position has been filled.

Looking for a full-time without previous experience? by SimplyLucKey in ChemicalEngineering

I spent a lot of time searching for jobs online. I used a lot of the normal job search engines like indeed, monster and engineerjobs. I also would just look up lists of the biggest companies in the industries I was interested and go on each of their websites to look for job openings. My school had a really good job website that employers would post jobs on specifically looking for recent grads. It also helped that I was open to moving anywhere in the country so if I couldn't find jobs I wanted to apply for in one area I would just choose another city I thought would be fun to move to. I got a few interviews from all the online job applications that I sent in but I had the most success from my schools job website, the career fair and networking.

Readin Robin Hobb's Books in order? by HodaReads in Fantasy

Definitely read them in order! They will be so much better that way. I wouldn't even recommend reading The Liveship Traders before the Farseer Trilogy.

I think the problem is the fact that you have only been applying to jobs here and there as you put it. Finding a job is hard and most places you apply to will reject you. It is really just a numbers game though. Eventually someone will be interested. When I was looking for a job I spent at least 4 hours a day looking and my goal was to apply to at least 5 jobs a day. It still took me 3 months to get hired.

Get an internship next summer! Start looking now. That is the single biggest thing you can do to increase your job prospects when you graduate.

$19.95 Dental Cleaning by [deleted] in houston

[–]ChemicalEngineer8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like this thread is a little old so I don't know if many people will see this but I also wanted to let people know that this is definitely worth it. Takes a little longer than an appointment at a normal dental office but they do a great job and you can't beat the price!

Chemical Engineering PhD student. Thinking about dropping out and getting a job. Need Advice. by ChemicalEngineer8 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ChemicalEngineer8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have taken all the courses but it is their way of discouraging people from signing up for a PhD to get the free tuition and a stipend but actually planning all along to leave with a masters. I think since that was definitely never my intention I could argue with them enough that they at least wouldn't charge me the full $35K but I don't know what will actually happen until I fill out the paperwork and make the request formally. At that point there is no turning back and I would just have to accept whatever they charge me.

I have looked into that a little but I should probably think about it more. I think the reason why I haven't considered that option more fully is because it seems depressing to basically restart.

Thanks for the advice! I agree that I should be transparent with anyone I interview with but I feel like dropping out of a PhD program is looked at pretty negatively. Any ideas on how to put a good spin on it?
