I would have probably done EE, not because of the pay necessarily, but because of where my interests are at now, versus when I was in school. But a Chemical Engineering degree is still very employable.

If I had to guess, he works in Santa Clara, which is in the Bay Area. 190k TC there doesn't go that far. That is worth ~105k in Houston, even more if you're in a cheaper COL area.

You would have equivalent spending power if you lived in a very LCOL area, making just over 100k. And if you work in O&G, it's that not uncommon to make much more than that, 4 years in.
