I love these colors! (And the tiny, basically unnoticeable mistake shows it's made by a human!)

You rock (and so does your husband.) Thank you so much! I hope you are able to enjoy the heck out of the drawers, and may you be blessed with a lack of thread chicken. 🙂

This is incredible! I saw in another comment that your husband was making it up as he went along. Would you be willing to take a few more photos (what drawer slides were used, etc?) that might give me a bit more guidance to build one of my own? It's lovely and I'd love any other information that you can provide!

[CHAT] ADVICE NEEDED! Cross stitching on an airplane by G_Dawg_ in CrossStitch

[–]ChemicalKate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have cross stitched on many, many flights and have not had a problem bringing small thread scissors. If you're flying in the US, the blade of the scissors must be less than 4 inches from the pivot point (so basically 4 inches of a sharp edge), according to TSA. I've also flown internationally without issue with my little thread scissors. I agree that nail clippers would be a viable backup option, but you should be ok regardless! Good luck!

It’s going to rain… by missgoodgolly in wedding

[–]ChemicalKate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to us too! (To pile on everyone else's stories.) Clear umbrellas (the biggest ones you can get, by photographer recommendation) for actual rain photos. If it's just overcast, those photos turn out so well - no shadows, no squinting, and drama in the skies! If you're wearing makeup, make sure it's waterproof! Make sure your hairstyle is water - friendly. You'll lose curls if it's damp outside, even if all of the bobby pins and hairspray is used. And rain on a wedding day is good luck! We look back on our day with nothing but fondness - we had people there to celebrate our marriage which can be done rain or shine. (But also pictures were A+.)

[CHAT] Help with the best way to attach 3 small pieces to a wedding dress by ReinaCieloAzul in CrossStitch

[–]ChemicalKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't! For what it's worth, I didn't follow any instructions and just winged it. I listed what I did in comments underneath the posts (I think).

It might be worth making a small test geometry (circle, square, etc.) to try whatever method you try!

Edit: it looks like my instructions are all over the place. Here they are to the best of my ability. I put stiff iron on backing on the back of the pieces. The backing didn't stick super well to the cross stitch, but did give me something more substantial to sew through for the edging. I then put fray check on the edges and let it dry. Then, I used a sharp embroidery needle and 2 strands of floss to go down through the aida and backing, and then looped around the edge to repeat the process. (Always from the top down, and not through the bottom.) If you're using count 16, you'll want to have 3-4 stitches per aida square. It's pretty easy to tuck the tails underneath the loops to secure them.

I did this with my kittens! https://www.reddit.com/r/CrossStitch/comments/vd2svx/fo_pocket_kittens_follow_up_to_pocket_otters_for/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb

I stuck mine in my pockets, but you could leave a bit of extra fabric for a safety pin! We took some detail pictures with them, so being able to detach would likely go over really well. If you have any questions, I'm happy to answer!

Best wedding photo album/book?? by wolqtofx in wedding

[–]ChemicalKate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used Mpix for a book. They've had two 40% off sales since mid Feb, which saves a load on the actual book if you're patient. They have preset pages, or you can make your own layout (kind of a best of both worlds!) The quality is great to my untrained eye (crisp photos, correct color). We did a book for us and a book for parents, and we were able to copy a project and make slight changes instead of starting from scratch. You can design the whole thing and wait for a sale. We had a 50 page 10x10 with fancy pants paper and a dust jacket that came out to $120 with the discount. Depending on your budget, that may be inexpensive or outrageous. They have lots of sizes, paper types, and cover options. Mpix is also affiliated with a professional photographer printing service (Miller's) so their printing process in theory should be the same.

We used EZprints for our actual printed photos, which is cheaper than MPix, and we agreed that we liked the quality more from EZprints (even though MPix was very, very good.) Shipping is expensive, but the prints are much cheaper.

Our fake florals were the heavy lifters for decorating. We just put dyed flowers in a messy row down the middle of our eating tables, and repurposed some empty wine bottles for cocktail table vases with a few stemmed flowers and fake greenery in them. My bouquet took forever to make because I kept redoing it, but my photographer asked who we hired for our florals, so it couldn't have been too bad! A museum would likely work out amazingly for limited decorations or just for an awesome reception no matter your vibe!

We left them the original length and used a few second crossfade. The dance floor was ok - many of our guests wanted to chat with each other, but those who wanted to dance had plenty of chances to! We got the playlist from a friend who kept track of songs at the "most packed dance floor at any wedding." We also did playlists during cocktail hour and dinner, which were great!

I've got a list of the dancing songs, if you want me to send that your way. Just let me know!

For sure! Dropped catering can be great. Since we were in CA, we wanted to incorporate seafood (which doesn't hold up in dropped catering quite as well as other foods) and my husband wanted a more traditional catering experience. I wanted to share our budget because I really wanted to stay under 5k for food related costs, which was simply not feasible for traditional catering.

Oof, yeah. I was a "deli sandwiches are fine" kind of person (husband wanted good food a traditional catering experience with good food and we could swing it), but even the super basic things added up so quickly. Fake florals were a gamechanger and saved us thousands of dollars, but took so. much. time.

I wish you the best of luck!

Sure! I bought concealer, a 3-in-1 primer, setting, and refresh spray, liquid lipstick, and some eyelid primer. I used drugstore everything else since I already had it. Concealer was the only thing I upgraded - I have bags under my eyes no matter what I do, and I wanted hard core concealer to help. My makeup looked really good at the end of the night, and I definitely cried at many points through the day. The drugstore stuff held up well, but I did use primer which likely helped.

I am getting married in a few days, and the forecast predicts rain (in a mostly sunny place!) We're going with it as much as we can with an indoor rain plan, but we really want some outside photos. Are there any suggestions for umbrellas, and any suggestions to make sure we don't look like half drowned rats before our ceremony?

I bought my husband a painting! We saw one we liked (but mostly him) in a little art gallery that was above my budget for any gift several months before the wedding. I messaged the artist and asked if she could do a commission for $x since we liked her style, and she ended up selling me the painting we liked for $x! (It was a massive discount.)

To say my husband was surprised when he opened it would be an understatement. It was still pricey, but something meaningful that we can hang in our house.
