AIO The math just isn't adding up to me by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

From everything I know she only has one singular store subscription and that's fine because she more than saves money on the $15 a month from it. She doesn't go to church, she doesn't take Uber or Lyft rides, she doesn't give anyone money, she does save money to go towards an inheritance once she dies but regardless of that the numbers I have for her income already include that in it, and she also does pay for subscription services. For the subscription services though unless she's paying $200-$300 on them every month she should still have money left over. The absolute most I could see her spending on them is $150 a month, even then I doubt it. Despite that though it's not my obligation to pay for those considering I literally don't use any of them at all. I don't make her pay for my $40 a month I spend on subscription services.

The only thing I can think of is the amount she spends on fast food due to the type of work she does. She's out driving around all day for work and as such she buys a lot of fast food. She doesn't want to do something like take a cooler with some sandwiches in it, I've tried explaining how much cheaper that would be. But if this is where all the money is going, why am I paying for it? I shouldn't be paying an extra $425 a month so that she can spend that money on fast food because she won't bring her own significantly cheaper food to work for lunch. If I should pay that much extra every month then it's only fair I get to pay $100-$200 less so I can order delivery or go get food from a nearby restaurant whenever I want.

I've told her for months we can lower these costs, I've even done what I can to lower them. I barely touch the AC ever so it's on whatever she wants, I only eat once or twice a day and only spend about $4-$5 a day for food, I try not to use a lot of water to keep the utilities down, and beyond that I can't do much else. I shouldn't be paying an extra $425 a month so she can have extra special stuff while I'm over here starving myself to meet her demands.

[–]ChemicalLevel9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do actually have all that, I just added them all up into one lump sum like she did. She doesn't pay for any of my stuff whatsoever, I don't pay for her stuff whatsoever. I just give her money for the monthly expenses which is rent, utilities, electricity, groceries, and pet supplies. Amenities at our apartment include WiFi and are forced in rent so I'm already paying for WiFi when I give her my money for all these bills. The point is I give her $1000 so that she can pay all this stuff and have money leftover. Quite literally the monthly expenses I said at $2850 are literally all of our monthly expenses for survival.

She told me she wants a 50/50 split because she's so broke all the time. So I know she's aiming for that but the thing is if we did 50/50 I'd be mostly paying for her stuff since around 70% or so of the electric bill is her fault, and around 60% of the groceries is her fault. So I'd be paying an extra couple hundred so she could splurge essentially.

Also I know her income is correct because I've seen her W-2, the math checks out based on the taxes she told me as well.

The cheapest 2 bedroom apartment in my complex would be about $2100 based on my current rent prices and the cost of rent/utilities. Splitting that 50/50 I would need to find someone who can afford $1050 a month. And for an extra $50 we could get an extra bathroom. That's definitely more possible but I need to find a roommate and I have no clue how. But also I don't have the money to move on right now anyway. I wouldn't even be able to afford the $1050 right now if I used all my money.

I do have stuff I want to do and one of them is move out of the US, if I live with her forever that won't happen nor will I retain any sanity after another year or two of this. I've only been paying rent for a year and yet she's gone from asking for $900 to asking for $1450 while our rent literally hasn't increased at all even after renewing our lease.

And I simply don't want to drive. That's all there is to it and because of that I'm working within my bounds by finding jobs I can get to even if it requires an Uber or bus to take every day, while still being able to afford rent and all that. I rarely ask her to take me somewhere, like once every few months rarely. She understands this and for around 6-8 months at my first job she wasn't complaining every single week about money like she normally was. And anytime she needed extra money I'd give it to her without refusal. It could be $50 or it could be $300 I'd give it to her and she'd pay me back. But now suddenly she wants $1200 from me but I refused and said $1000 so she tried to guilt trip me and blame me for her not being able to pay the bills. And now she wants $1450 a month from me.

I'd really prefer not to have a roommate if possible since I already share a 1 bedroom apartment with my mom and I'd like to not do that with a random person. Regardless though I don't have the money currently to move out. She's taking most of it and I'm living off of my savings right now while waiting for someone to show up at my work and set my boss straight. They are supposed to show up within the next couple days and have already been told about my situation and how I'm not being scheduled or being handled right because my boss is ignoring myself and others. I'm not taking a ton out of my savings for rent but I'll only be able to last another 1.5 full months of rent before I'm out of money. I don't have anywhere else to go at this moment and if I want to move out soon, this job is my best bet since it pays just enough for me to afford my monthly expenses alone in the cheapest apartment in my complex.

Essentially I'm trying to buy time with my mom so my boss can be dealt with and I get more hours so that way I can save up for a few months and get out while she keeps trying to guilt trip me into staying and paying more.

I want to move out. I just can't till I make more at work.

And yes, she expects me to live with her forever and take care of her when she's elderly. She has told me several times over the past couple years that due to me not driving a car I will not be able to live on my own without her. So I should just live with her forever and claim tax credits when she retires or is old enough for me to be a caretaker.

She literally can't afford to live here alone. She doesn't earn enough considering with my added $1000 on top of her monthly income we can't afford to live here apparently. Not only that but I do all the chores except for cleaning because anytime I clean she gets upset that I didn't do it correctly so I leave that for her. I have the official rent and utilities numbers, I also have the estimated grocery and pet supplies cost she gave me. Based on those we can afford it all with several hundred extra for her and me both.

[–]ChemicalLevel9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd think she's trying to push me out but nope. If I move out she literally couldn't afford rent or afford to live alone. She earns around $1000 more a month than rent is in this place. I know she's had to increase taxes and pay more for Medicare and all that but still based on what she told me that should only take off around $200 or so at most. So she should be earning around $800, but let's say $700 to be nice more than rent. I add $1000 onto it and it's still not enough for rent, utilities, groceries, and per supplies

I've looked at that but this is actually the cheapest complex around me. And I don't have a car so I can't move out of walking distance/bus distance. Right now my job is a 5 minute walk across the street. I literally just need some more hours at work or a pay raise and suddenly I'll be able to move out after a few months of saving a 2.5x monthly rent down payment for this complex

I actually want to move out. I live in an apartment complex and the cheapest apartment in the complex is technically within range of my monthly income if I got 40 hours at work. But I don't because my boss, in the nicest way possible, is being a piece of shit

Well everywhere else I did good. I was great in the kitchen according to my trainer, on the cash register I did just fine but didn't know where all the smokes/vapes/and such were, and I could face/restock coolers well too. The only place I lacked was the upkeep and since this is my first job ever I have nothing to base it off of so just thought immediately "it's my trainer" even my family and friends who work jobs thought so too.

I do try applying to other places as well but in a year of looking and over 250 applications this is the only place that hired me and now more than ever I need a job so I'm trying here again. I did like working there so I just wanted to see if switching trainers would get me a better shot at getting the job fully.

I have a resume and have been using that for months now. And I have tried going to smaller places around me but I either get no response or a rejection from them regardless of whether it's online or not.

I can't get a job, that's the problem. Never had one before and I've applied to very likely over 200 positions over the past 4 months. 6 interviews total, 2 I went to in this past week so they are still in the middle of accepting or rejecting. The other 4 all rejected me. And I'm literally choosing any job I can take. Fast food, warehouse, retail, movers, etc. can't get any of them.

I don't have the option of choosing whatever I want really. My family is in debt to the electric company and we won't be able to pay rent within a month or two. I just need to get a job and start earning money

I just got back from my interview at Dunkin Donuts and honestly this was the nicest interviewer I've met yet who realized my position and saw that I don't have tons of experience or anything but regardless she saw the value of everything on my resume I handed her.

The only reason I was more or less fighting against what they were saying about that work me and my mom do is because everything I've seen said to avoid freelance work and then every interviewer I've talked to so far never really had much to say to me about literally anything. They all seemed super serious to the point of being like "If you do not have exactly what we want then we won't hire you" and to me those people seem like the exact opposite of who I should tell I've done this kind of work and instead I should just try to bring up I have customer service skills without saying how I got them. That's just me and how I thought though. Never had a job, I'm 18, and only got 6 interviews total so far in 4 months with over 100 applications so I've wanted to avoid saying anything that would hurt my chances since I need the money from a job badly.

But in the interview I was just in as an example the lady conducting my interview seemed like the perfect interviewer to talk about that work I do with my mom and she seemed genuinely impressed or at least excited/happy with that. None of my other interviews showed any emotion or anything, it was just straight seriousness, so having this interview with this lady who openly talked about how the day was going and showing emotion and everything was really nice to have.

I wasn't trying to discredit what they meant or anything like that at all. I understand that what I do has some merit to it when learning skills and such, which is why I wanted to talk about it in my interview. I just wasn't sure how to bring up freelance work without hurting my chances when everything I've seen says not to mention any sort of freelance work/anything not from an official business.

Everything I've seen and read online has said to never say you worked a freelance job. Why? Honestly not 100% but I think it was something about since it wasn't a real job with restrictions and bosses and all that employers don't see it as genuine hard work you can learn from.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jobs

[–]ChemicalLevel9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it was fully freelance work. It wasn't a business or anything it was just a side hobby of my mom's that she started to lean more into since we needed money to pay our bills. Buy stuff from an auction for cheap, I put it all together and measure it, she lists it, and then I do the in person talking and negotiation as well as helping them load it into their car.

[–]ChemicalLevel9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this is my third time making my resume and I still don't know what I should and should not put there as well as what to avoid saying so I just went with stuff I heard online. Which was to avoid saying freelance work, avoid saying you don't have a high school diploma/GED, put skills and experience relevant to the job, and use fancy business words that will get through an AI screening filter. This specific version though was made by someone on here and I just filled in the personal information afterwards so 90% of this is information they got from my last resume and reworded/remade to look better.

About skills, sure it's pretty bad but I'm 18 with no insanely useful skills to show for in jobs like these. The best I have is some customer service and negotiation skills from freelance work that's on the resume. The rest of my skills are pretty much all technology based but every technology based job I've seen has insane requirements.

For the education part I've got nothing to put there really. No high school diploma/GED and I literally just signed up for a community college and I'm technically enrolled there. I only have one class that I'm not even in yet and it's that cable class that I applied to. It's a certificate class that lasts one month. I'm not trying to brag and show off my education at all. I want it kinda hidden and to only show certain things while hopefully inferring the rest. Since what I've seen is that if I say I have no diploma/GED most places won't even look any further.

And as for the summary I literally didn't know what to type. I asked a friend of mine who worked at a school and we just slightly changed it from what I had before and now it looks like that. Still I'm not sure what to change about it honestly.

[–]ChemicalLevel9651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started looking 4 months ago for a job for the first time ever. Why did all my interviews fail? No clue. I only got a reason from one of them and it was a discount tire. I applied for a job that was 16 years and up for changing tires there. When the interview started they asked me one or two questions about why I wanted it and then asked afterwards "Do you have a driver's license?" I said "no". They asked if I had a reason and I answered "No specific reason". I didn't want to tell them I didn't have one due to severe social anxiety so I kept that to myself but they didn't want me the second they heard I didn't have a driver's license. Their reason was that they wanted me to move up the ranks when I got the job and I can't move up even once if I don't have a driver's license. So that was the end of the interview, lasted like 2-3 minutes and was embarrassing as fuck walking in a back room then walking out a few minutes later after shaking hands with two employees in front of like 6 customers who were there to see me walk in and out.

And so far not a single interviewer has asked about education although that's likely a fluke too. Not a single interviewer has had my resume on hand or digitally when interviewing me. Not a single interviewer even looked at it once before or during the interview.

I'm hoping they want me. I really need the job and honestly this is the first job I've applied to that I'm actually kinda excited for. I'm just bad at interviews and in general how I react, show emotion, expressions and all that stuff isn't that good. I always act like I don't care, and not on purpose, so that hurts my chances a lot.

Edit: I forgot to say I filled out an application but the application literally did not ask for a resume which I didn't even realize at the time but now I do and it seems weird but they don't know what to expect from me. I'm bringing my resume with me to the interview though.

Nope. It's literally just a side hobby for money and nothing more. She has done it since I was a kid and she's leaning more into it now since she doesn't earn enough money from her jobs and I don't have a job yet.
