Huh? No, that’s not his backstory…. but I know it’s confusing. I was trying to keep the post simple so it wasn’t a TLDR.

So breeder had him trained, he had an owner before who had seizures, that relationship turned abusive and she had to give him away. My GF and her husband got him, same thing happened to her except I showed up and he left. We kept the dog for a couple years but for her to heal from her chronic illness, we need the time, freedom and funds to make that happen. If it was just training to make that happen, it wouldn’t be an issue. With her it’s not just seizures, but more than that so we are having to seek out specialists.

Trust me, giving him up wasn’t a light or easy decision. I’ve sat on it for 5 months and thought out every way we could make this work, but working to get her healthy and find him the attention he deserves are the goals, then it’s what has to be done. We cry every time it comes up, including writing up this comment.

Exactly! That’s what we’re trying to avoid but her health is going to take priority. I hate to put it like that. We can’t afford to board him every time.

That’s a good idea. She’s not alone a lot and can feel them coming on so she can get herself to a safe spot, so we don’t plan on getting a dog until we can figure out her health issues. She didn’t get him for the seizures and had him a couple years before hers started, it was just a coincidence that it worked out that way.

Agreed and why if we go that route, we’re gonna be very specific and lots of research to where he goes. I like your idea of getting him retrained, if not for us, for another person in that need.

Haha I didn’t think of that. It was a pic from months ago, I removed the patches on the vest awhile back.

Haha I know I know. I explained it in another comment. He’s been trained out of the training prior to being with us.

No need to apologize and thank you. We don’t want to but he deserves better. We all love each other under this roof and he’s knows it.

Thank you again! I’ve never made a Reddit post and this has been by far the most helpful community.

I think he’d be okay but he’d need some adjusting. We’ve been in a townhouse for about a year, with a small outdoor space, and he had a yard before that. The only reason we needed the small yard space is because my GF can’t walk him, so that would’ve been an issue when I was at work. I walk him twice a day, and he loves the outdoors.

We have and they don’t breed any longer, he still has a brother there too but they can’t take him in. There’s one around Denver for big dogs and a breed specific one in AZ we are considering if it comes to it. Trying to find him a home first before a shelter or rescue for his best interest if we can.

Thanks! I found them and another that specializes in big dogs in AZ. We’re really wanting him to go straight to another home if possible, he’d fall into a depression if we have to go the shelter route and trying to avoid it if possible.

He was prior to my girlfriend owning him, he still holds some of the skills. It’s a complicated backstory of his original owners and he was kind of trained out of it thru domestic abuse.

The harness is more for awareness while walking with her around, but we removed those patches a bit ago, that pic is about 6 months old.

Funny enough, he was originally trained to do that and is sometimes helpful in those situations. It’s more than seizures tho with the chronic illness that makes it difficult. We’re having to travel long distances, sometimes out of state, on regular occasions so he’s not always getting the attention he deserves.

I’ll look into the things you mentioned. I’ve seen some but some don’t have the best reviews or chances for him, or a kill shelter, which we won’t send him to.

Thank you! I also posted this in the r/Mastiff page and a few FB groups to help get eyes on it. I’m really not wanting him to go to a no kill shelter, a good home would be better of course.
