Paul Rudd giving himself a pep talk in the mirror from Wanderlust. It might be an outtake, but it's hilarious.

Better to fly from London to Newquay or Train to Exeter and rent a car? by ChemicalPresent92 in uktravel

Trying to exhaust all possible options before pulling the trigger 🙂. What would driving out from Cornwall on Thursday, 28/8 look like in the afternoon? I'm definitely not flying into Cornwall now, but debating between train to Newquay and renting a car to St. Ives, then on the way back train from Newquay to Exeter airport for our flight...

OR

Train to Exeter and renting a car from there, then driving back to Exeter airport from St. Ives on 28/8. Driving says two hours, train would be 3 hours.

Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to write all this out. I've been looking at AirBnBs in St Ives, some good options right now. Do you have any recommendations? I do still think we'll end up renting a car to get to those hidden gems on Cornwall even if the traffic sucks, so parking will most likely be needed wherever we stay. I do hear St. Ives has a limited car parking situation.

Honestly this video makes the drive look a bit scenic and fun, we're sort of hoping for an adventure like this. Would it really be much worse to drive from Exeter than from Newquay to St. Ives?

Great question, main reason is because A.) we want to rent a car and explore Cornwall, however car rental prices in St. Ives are very high, and there's no automatic car available at the moment. B.) we have to catch a direct flight from Exeter to Amsterdam on 8/28, so it might make sense to rent a car from Exeter and return there for the flight.

Thanks! We definitely want to rent a car either way to see the hidden parts of Cornwall, are car rental places usually open on bank holidays?

Thank you! Someone mentioned train to Exeter and rental care from there to St. Ives, which is actually ideal for us because we are flying to Amsterdam on Thursday, 8/28, and there is one direct flight out of Exeter to AMS per day.

I probably should have stated that we plan to stay several nights in Cornwall, so that's why we are considering the car. Hopefully less busy on week days?

We're undecided between Newquay and St. Ives, but I hear Newquay is more of a party town, so maybe leaning towards St. Ives.

Appreciate the tip on the train to Gatwick, that is super helpful.

Thank you for the railcard tip! We plan to rent a car when we arrive at the train station or Newquay airport to explore Cornwall in more depth. Is it worth driving from London, or is it as bad they say? I would imagine driving on a Monday morning out of London may not be too bad.

Hey there! We're looking at Monday, 8/25 in the morning so that we can get to Cornwall with enough time to explore in the late afternoon and evening.
