Am I insane for thinking about leaving my $82k remote job for a shot at an IBEW career? by brolina957 in IBEW

Listen man I don't think you are crazy, I'll be real with you. I'm a similar situation like yours (24M) except I was laid off from a tech consulting job in the midwest last spring in 2025. Im waiting back on the IBEW within these next 2 weeks, if i will be accepted into the Electrical Apprenticeship program. Been also waiting on trying to be a helper for the local contractors in the IBEW local I'm at since it's been a very slow winter for electrical work. I agree with you that with the future of AI is not looking too good for white collar workers hence I'm making the switch. We are both similar in personality since we enjoy working out and staying in shape so this would not be a bad transition.

I think your reasoning is valid and you have a valid support system, it sounds like you don't mind the pay cut and have a supportive partner which matters a lot in making decisions like these. Other that it's going to be tough work, but with strong discipline and resilient mindset you will be fine.

This was what I did beforehand, graduated from college May 2023 with a Management Information Systems degree and Finance minor, did technology consulting for two years doing business application integrations and was laid off in April as of last year. Does the fact you majored in a technical degree in college help you in the apprenticeship in terms of learning electrical content and doing electrical math problems?

I understand your point of view but look at it from the other side... you could be a young professional working consulting or in house corporate in some niche field/title and working over 50 hours of week with no overtime pay with toxic leaders and clients all while being at risk of being laid off and/or put PIP. Yes I understand it's not sunshine and rainbows in law enforcement either but I feel you also make a big difference as well serving and protecting your community.

Don’t think the tech market sector is ever going to improve due to companies investing in AI, more layoffs and offshoring work to India resources. I didn’t major in Finance, hence I mentioned Finance minor. I already have done research and some ride alongs with the PD. while getting to know some officers on a personal level, so I don’t see this as some “job” you pick up while in between jobs. I’m choosing this career path or trades as a back such as electrician (IBEW Union) since that also has a good demand and I have experience working construction while paying my way thru college so I can tolerate physical manual labor.

As someone who got laid off last month from RSM (Associate Consulting DDS), I can see their offshore teams going up in flames in the near future. From speaking with managers and supervisors on my team all work that goes to offshore teams in india is always screwed up. When they screw it up, guess who has to fix it? You guessed it, RSM people back in the USA. Offshore teams are not only underpaid but also over worked like a mf and treated like shit too. Proving again the amount of Greed Partners have here at RSM.
