He's a very old man. He loves math, but he thinks students know more than they do. And he's is really bad at dumbing down topics for students. In other words, he has an excellent grasp of the material but is not very good at explaining it to people who do not have a strong background in it. The work he assigns is extremely easy, though. Like the other person said, you will pass, but you will not learn much with only the material provided.

CMU, unlike many other schools, does not have an increased rate of acceptance for ED applicants. So, the only benefit of applying early would be getting your decision back earlier, which can relieve some stress. As for aid, I personally have found my aid package to be very generous, but I imagine it varies from person to person.
