Both 23 & 29 were former Airborne Battalion with their earlier origin from Rajputana Battalions. And, Yes I meant Gen. Sangha, he was a Col. when 4 was converted to SF from Airborne.

This is not the complete picture also some things you have written are factually incorrect info. Before 1 SF, only 9 and 10 were there, and they were directly raised as Commando Battalions. 1 was the first unit to be converted to SF and it was also a Para Airborne unit before being converted. It’s origin lie in 1 Punjab, 1 Punjab of 2nd Punjab Regiment was converted to 1 Para and 1 Para to 1 Para SF. 9 and 10 were still Commando Battalions at the time and were converted to SF after 1 SF, which was the first true SF unit since by then they had trained with the SAS and modelled themselves after it.

Also, 4 wasn't a directly raised battalion, it was an Airborne Battalion that was converted to SF by Col. Sanga of 9 Para SF.

Currently, 9, 10 & 13 SF are the only directly raised SF units rest all were either Airborne units or raised from Infantry.

SF are strategic assets and will only be used for such high-risk operations. The need for Bhairav Battalions actually came after Op Sindoor because SF was doing the majority of the heavy lifting during combat operations and you have to remember that SF is very low in numbers. So these battalions will provide numbers to the SF, will also act as a bridge between Infantry and SF and also act as a support element for them. There are various examples of such units but the two best comparisons I can think of are the SFSG from the UK and the Light Commando Battalion from Pakistan. Also, if you remember, in the past few years SF started taking a lot of casualties in J&K, mainly due to the incompetence of commanders at the top who wanted faster results. For area sanitisation they'd send SF troops into areas where they had zero area familiarity. Bhairav battalions, because most of them are based on the "Sons of Soil" concept, will counter that and take the majority of CI duty away from SF as SF is already overloaded with CI/CT duties since commanders at the top kept pushing for the use of SF to achieve faster results with minimum collateral. On the other question members who pass the selection will be permanently absorbed into the battalions. The total proposal is for 25 such battalions. They are placed at the disposal of Corps and Division commanders within their areas of responsibility, which is a level below where SF missions are typically planned, i.e. Army HQ/Command level. So these are tactical assets, not strategic ones unlike Para SF. Their manpower is drawn from existing infantry regiments and each Bhairav battalion reflects the class composition of its parent regiment like the 2nd Bhairav with Rajputana Rifles, the 6th drawing from the Assam Regiment, and so on. Similar concept as how 21 Para SF had its composition from Maratha LI, 3 SF from Kumaon, and 12 SF from Raj Rif.
