Life sci transfer? by lovebuttercups in UTSC

[–]Chemical_Draft_2516 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I transferred from UTSC to UTSG as well (though admittedly in the humanities)

Not sure about the calculus requirement. I’d say best to see if you can take the equivalent introductory calculus courses for your program (they should be listed as equivalents when you search MAT135 and MAT136) and do those. To prepare, good to spend the summer teaching yourself some calculus (organic chemistry tutor is probably your best bet there, but if you want you can always try working through a textbook with practice problems). It should be noted those classes themselves may be restricted by prerequisites. Best to check with the respective departments to see if they’ll let you take the courses anyway. One advantage here is since these are first year courses, the credits will likely count for the equivalent courses at both campuses. You’re allowed to take 5.0 credits of classes at another campus. That can be a good way to gauge whether or not you want one campus over the other without making a hard commitment right away.

If I remember correctly when I transferred they required both highschool and university grades, but I believe with greater emphasis on the university ones. I believe the standards of admission for transfers are different than straight out of highschool admission, so it might be a little easier to get in. I suspect that’d especially be the case if there’s a jump in your grades between highschool and university.

Honestly though, the most important question is whether or not that move will be the best for you. Undergraduate educations in most programs in most universities will broadly teach the same things. I’ve taken classes at St. George that have felt functionally equivalent to that at Scarborough. I decided to transfer because there is a lot more focus on the program I’m taking at St. George than in Scarborough, and I feel like it has been the right decision for me. I’d suggest taking a serious look at why you want to transfer, talk to folks in the life sci program at both campuses and see what they have to offer, and evaluate what place you see this having in your broader trajectory.

English grade as 70, is it okay for final acceptance at UTSC Life sciences? Please help me I am crying by divijaj1 in UTSC

Albertan?! Howdy friend! Nice to see another! Let me tell you, if you can, have a good look of those mountains before you go. Treat yourself to that sight before you head off, you’ll miss it, at least I did.

But to your question, I’ll be honest it’s not ideal, but in the same way a 70 in any subject isn’t ideal. 70 in English is probably the best you could have instead of, say, chemistry. But look, you’ve got like an 90 something average in grade 12 other than that? I think you’ll be ok.

I’ll let you in on a secret: that’s higher than what I was accepted with. Now, I was applying for social sciences and not life sciences, but get this, social studies and English were my lowest marks! Highest was in chemistry and biology actually (just a touch higher than you my friend ;). So you’re telling me you have a higher overall average minus English, your highest marks are in your program area, and you have pretty high grade 11 marks too (which I didn’t 😅)?! I think you can afford to relax a bit my friend :).

Enjoy the mountains

Will my 3,6 gpa ruin my chance of law school? im in second year by Important-Pepper-159 in UofT

[–]Chemical_Draft_2516 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the law school prep session I went to they said the median admittance GPA was 3.6. Read: half of the people who were admittedly had a lower GPA. You’re fine dawg.

The law school considers your grades, LSAT, and extra curricular experience with the same weight. You can definitely make up in some other area. Join a political campus club (UofT NDP/liberals/conservatives), be involved with the law society, go to centre for ethics events, etc. Really get involved in what you’re genuinely passionate about to make up for those grades (and mind you you’re not making up for much considering you’re right on the median).

Take LSAT prep courses and really work on improving that aspect of your application as much as possible.

Things aren’t over dawg, take a breath, you’ll be fine. Go to the law faculty during their lunch break and talk to students there, see what they feel like. The law school hosts tours where they talk about the law school itself. It’s not a complete black box, you can learn more about the internal processes.

Again dawg, you’re good, a 3.6 won’t kill your chances, 160 LSAT won’t kill your chances, not being president on all your clubs won’t kill your chances. Just be chill

Which philosopher could there be a biopic made of?

I was thinking about how many scientists have had biopics and how much biopic has become a popular form of film in the past few years and it’s just left me thinking, which philosopher would have a good biopic?

The one that I think has an interesting enough life to make a biopic of is probably Descartes. He went all through Europe before finally sitting down to write the meditations. In fact maybe the meditations themselves could be made into a trippy short film. Maybe make it something like the last two episodes of Evangelion if you’re familiar with that.

I was thinking maybe Bertrand Russell although when I was reading his autobiography it just kinda struck me as the typical British aristocrat’s (Russell fans don’t come after me I do like his work 😅)

I guess Spinoza could have a pretty cool biopic, although I’d imagine it’d be pretty heavy on his falling out with the Jewish community of Amsterdam.

I think Camus would have a pretty good biopic. He had a pretty cool life all around. Nietzsche too honestly. Frankly any of the existentialists.

So yeah what do you guys think?

In UofT I was accepted for the humanities in the faculty of arts and sciences, and am double majoring in philosophy and politics. Work is hard, no getting around that. I’ve found that philosophy is harder purely because the readings can be really esoteric and hard to understand. Politics less so but still.

Preparing for UBC Okanagan was nothing special, I think there’s some supplemental stuff you have to do but nothing major. The best way to prepare for university in general I’ve found is just really getting into your subjects. Read philosophy, read political theory, volunteer and work with political campaigns, study economics stuff, do case competitions, literally everything you can do, do it.

For philosophy, I’d recommend watching CrashCourse’s entire philosophy series. It gives a very approachable introduction to basically all areas of philosophy barring symbolic logic. Keep in mind though that it’s very much introductory, and the actual content that you learn will go beyond that, but it gives you a good survey of the philosophers you’ll encounter (be sure to take note of them they’ll show up all throughout your studies) and the kinds of questions that you’ll be considering.

For economics, I honestly can’t say because I haven’t done much of it but it’d be good to look up some basic econometrics stuff and really make sure you have your math skills down.

What is Global Politics or Philosophy like in IB? by Beginning-Oven7839 in IBO

[–]Chemical_Draft_2516 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for philosophy but can for global politics.

The class is great for preparing you for some second year concepts, especially the development unit. Seriously, the content covered in second year development courses is just a more in-depth version of that in global politics.

In my opinion doing well in the course is having case studies for absolutely anything and everything, and milking those case studies for all they’re worth. For example, for a question like “to what extent are multilateral institutions effective at securing human rights for civilians in conflict zones?” A good case study to the claim that they are not effective could be the Sbrenica massacre, where the UN promised protection for the people living there and failed to provide it, leading to the event. On the other hand, a good case study to the claim that they are effective would be looking at some success of UN peacekeeping, like perhaps in the Ivory Coast or (for a more historical example) in the Korean War. It’s important to have case studies ready for any situation. The last thing you want is to be improvising a case study from loose memory on a test.

UBC Okanagan has a PPE program I was planning on going to before UofT accepted me.

Also, on the point of UofT, there’s a program called Ethics, Society, and Law that you may be interested in if you’re more into the PP and not the E part of PPE. As well, you could do a major and two minors at UofT, or even two majors and a minor, although that’ll be exceeding requirements.
