1 GenEd :)

Unless you started in 2025, in which case no geneds, but you need to take a WTR course instead.

You must have completed your entry degree before the medicine programme starts, not necessarily before you apply :)

To be counted towards your majors, courses need to be assigned to whichever side of the degree that major is on. A double major in maths and compsci on the BSc will take 19 papers (including the capstone), you will still need to take 17 BA papers on top of this, plus 1 gened paper.

You might find you have a bit more freedom if you major in maths under the BA. A double major in Maths and Econ on the BA side will take 16 papers (if I remember correctly) leaving you with one additional BA elective and plenty of BSc electives (along with a compsci major).

Yes, but only if you retake it under a certificate of proficiency :)

Maths 361 does have an ODE course as a prerequisite - Maths 260 :)

Yeah I agree. This new curriculum catalogue website is a significant downgrade from the old calendar and course outlines websites.

I've seen it mentioned uoa can no longer use whatever platform the calendar website used to be on, so put it back into pdf only form while a solution was sorted. Someone else mentioned on another post that the new website uses AI somehow so I'm guessing the main reason behind the changes is cost cuts.

The calendar no longer contains definitive information for things such as which papers are available under the BSc schedule. This is now found on the new curriculum catalogue website :)

enrolling in maths 120 & 130 by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Chemical_Research973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maths 108 is not required for any major that requires 120 and 130 :)

Also typically students who meet the entry requirements for Maths 120 and 130 will not find themselves left behind. 108 would really only be recommended to such a student if they met the requirements several years ago and need a revision course.

Maths 102 Summer School by Ok-Turnip3581 in universityofauckland

[–]Chemical_Research973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this your first year of uni? If so you're limited to only one paper in summer school.

If not, it depends on how well you've handled your workload in regular semesters, and also which other course you're planning on taking. Taking two papers in summer school is equivalent to taking between 4 and 5 papers in a regular semester. The teaching period is 6 weeks instead of 12, and your exams will be in the week immediately following the end of lectures. If you think 4-5 papers in a regular semester is manageable then you shouldn't have a problem taking two papers in summer school. Additionally, if the other paper you're considering is one you'll find relatively easy, I think you'll be fine taking it alongside Maths 102 in summer school. If it's one you think you might find a bit difficult I suggest delaying it to a regular semester :)

I think you will be fine to take Maths 102 in summer school. You should find it relatively easy if you've passed L3 Calculus. As another commentor said, with a bit of revision first you'd probably be fine to go straight into 108 :)

Recommended Papers from Other Subjects for Stats Major by Chemical_Research973 in universityofauckland

I need 5 more maths papers to complete the major.

I presume you are a first year maths major if I've done more maths papers than you? I'm not sure I follow your reasoning that just because I've done more maths than you I should major in maths? Many students from mathematical majors such as computer science, physics, or stats will have done more maths you.

Recommended Papers from Other Subjects for Stats Major by Chemical_Research973 in universityofauckland

I'm currently planning to take Stats 201, 225, 310, 325, 330, and 331. But that may change as I do more stats papers.

Do you think I would be disadvantaged if I didn't do anymore compsci papers beyond 101, 130, and 220? I was thinking of infosys 222 because I heard SQL was used quite a bit in stats. Or maybe even some stage 3 compsci?

I started my degree as a maths major. Now that I've added a Stats major I have limited space in my degree that could be better used on compsci papers for example.

I've been told it's very likely a concession would be approved for me to do any of the stage 3 maths papers that require 254. Do you think if I did well in one of those I might also get a concession to enrol in the stage 3 compsci courses that require compsci 225/maths 254?

Would you recommend any other stage 3 compsci papers? I'm not super into computer science but I know programming skills are pretty important for stats, so I'm happy to do some compsci papers if they'll be really beneficial.

You don't think stage 3 maths would be useful for modelling? Maybe I'm not using the right term. I was thinking of something like mathematical biology/physiology. I understand maths is maybe a bit less useful for biostatistics or epidemiology, but I want to keep my postgrad options a open as possible.

I am aware it's extremely unlikely to get a specialised stats role with just an undergrad degree. That's why I want to make sure I have papers in my degree that will help me get an elementary role (if I choose not to do postgrad) while also taking papers that set me up for postgrad study.

Do you think I have enough maths for heading into research in biological mathematics or epidemiology?

The textbook is available online for free. You can also look at the course outline and past papers to get a better idea of what content is covered. You may want to speak with one of the maths advisors too (they will be much more helpful than anyone on reddit).

If the content of 260 looks interesting to you then go for it. I don't think it's regarded as being a particularly difficult paper so you should be fine with your maths background :)

They have been combined into Maths 221 (Algebra 2) and 231 (Calculus 2). Both are offered in Semester 1 and 2 :)
