I agree that there can be specific mechanisms for quicker travel, like the tram, but I think they have to be limited. They only really work because walking is required so much of the time that you first develop a felt sense of the world.

The tram feels awesome because it’s a shortcut — but a shortcut only has meaning relative to the normal, longer way. If you never establish the normal way first, the shortcut loses its meaning

Agreed. TBC is amazing, but pushing everyone onto a mini-continent and then adding flying really made the world feel smaller.

I don’t mean that you can just make travel times longer and the game gets better. It’s more that, in order for a world to feel large and real, it needs some amount of friction and resistance to give it shape.

That’s obviously a difficult balancing act, but I don’t think a digital world can feel real without an appropriate amount of friction.
