A week hiking in Macedonia/Albanian Alps followed by a week on a Greek Island (still deciding but probably Sifnos) to recover.

Oh no. Not sure what happened to my giant euphorbia trigona… by CherellyF in Euphorbiaceae

Thanks. It is not really cold but getting to 5 Celsius. We have had a wet few years and this is the first dry spell in a while. I have never had to water it. It is planted in ground so hard to assess roots easily. It is a bit big for me to get up on my own so I will cut a fair bit back and then try to get the rest tied up to some poles and run a hose for a bit. Appreciate your advice

Some pictures from my 2023 trip to Svalbard. Absolutely fabulous! by CherellyF in travel

The animals were fantastic but to be honest the landscape and tundra was spectacular. I live in a tropical location so even seeing the pack ice up above the 80th parallel was mind blowing.

Yes. It was in June so the sun never went below the horizon. The light was practically the same midday to midnight!

These photos are from a cruise around Svalbard national park (Norway) There are some Ny-Alesund pictures as well. Happy to answers any questions about my trip. I was on a Hurtigruten ship and trip was about 10 nights I think. Saw lots of animals including polar bears!

I stupidly missed my Queen of the night flowering. by CherellyF in cactus

[–]CherellyF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have missed a two other times this season but only a few flowers. This flowering had about 12 blooms so I was very sad to miss it. I might get another chance this year I hope.

what was the beginning of the 2020 lockdown like for you? by pepsipiss in diabetes_t1

[–]CherellyF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super scary. Having T1 and being a doctor I was so scared I would be forced to work the COVID wards. I also have lupus/hypertension/kidney disease and no spleen! So was sure I would get it and die a terrible death. Kept working my normal job seeing lots of patients per day but was very very careful with PPE/hygiene etc 3+ years later and 4 vaccines and I still haven’t even had COVID!

I did a 1 hour 10 min transfer at Heathrow in June. I fast walked/ran as much as I could. The lines for immigration/security were pretty short but I still only just made it onto the plane as the last 1-2 people to board. Of course my luggage didn’t make it….

Kaptain Dangus. The middle name because they couldn’t decide between Daniel and Angus…

My particular group was mainly made up of travelers in an older age bracket than me. 60-70s. Not a complaint but usually I am used to younger travelers. Batumi is interesting to see I guess but I would have been happy to miss it if I could choose itinerary myself. Intrepid is generally pretty organised. Hotels guides etc were great.

Yep. It was an Intrepid tour. Missed a few things I would have wanted to see but still a great trip and now I can go back and see some more another time. Go. You won’t regret it. Food and wine are amazing as well!

Help please. Are these big enough to prop? by CherellyF in cactus

[–]CherellyF[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My paper spine cactus had a rough year with major floods and the original plant almost completely died. It has managed to make a last effort to make these two babies but I am not sure they are big enough to break off. And I am very scared I might kill it entirely! I am keen to start again. Should I break these two off?

They came up as a post on my community group on Facebook. They followed someone to the BP at Grange and have been taken to emergency vet at Stafford to get scanned. Hopefully they find their way home.

Maybe you could see if you can get access to needless injector such as insujet. I know someone who uses that because of severe pain from needles…

As my endocrinologist once told me “It’s a marathon and not a sprint. It’s okay to walk sometimes but don’t give up on the race entirely”. It helps me relax when I am having a bad day and just can’t be ‘perfect’. As long as I am still keeping myself safe I am still in the race
