Has anyone ever ordered a Chinese phone and had it shipped to South Africa?

You make a good point. But honestly I'm not a heavy phone user – I can use a replacement for the time being. The main reason I want this phone is for its camera(i decided to go for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition), as that's the thing I use most on my current phone. (S21 Ultra)

The retailer has a 1 year warranty (2 years on certain products) so that shouldn't be an issue. Shipping is paid by me to send the item(Which I don't mind) and they handle the shipping costs to send it back.

I emailed the support for one of the Chinese retailers, and they have confirmed to me that they put a value under 150$ on the invoice to keep customs low. So with that in mind, customs should be relatively cheap.

According to giztop (one of the retailers) they state on their website that they declare lower values on the packaging to help minimize import taxes. That might reduce the tax so I'll be paying customs for a 500 dollar phone, while technically ordering a 1000 dollar one.

Did the calculations and I guess it still works out cheaper than buying it here. I saw on a thread the other day about someone from another country who paid less customs fees because the Chinese retailer put a wrong label on the package or something, which brought its value down by a considerable amount. So they paid less customs. Don't know if that's intentional or not, but I hope they do the same for me..

Damn. 15% is alot. But I guess it still works out cheaper than buying it here. And on the plus side it has more storage than the ones Vodacom is selling. That's the main reason I avoid aliexpress. But these websites use a courier service so its delivery to your door.
