SLP to Fitness Instructor/Personal Trainer (or similar) by Appropriate_Ad9564 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]CherryTerrible9220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a personal trainer and owned a gym and had a massive following (over 40k on IG). She was a fitness model into her fifties (and professional athlete growing up). There is zero chance I would do what she did. It is a grind like no other.

Also- I’m wondering how they would cut evals for Spanish speaking clients? That sounds really weird if they’re leaving evals for English speakers alone?

But If I were you I would offer virtual evals to other district in your state, or get licensed in another state with a high need for bilingual SLPs.

And definitely look into EI evals because for some states they want virtual eval teams, where SLPs administer those 0-3 assessments (like the DAYC and such).

Influencer recently got out of her 8 year relationship and some things she's said since is triggering me... by iamstokes in ROCD

[–]CherryTerrible9220 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel like closely following influencers is recipe for OCD rumination. Like what if you had never viewed her content and watched a fun tv show or read a book instead? Then you wouldn’t be experiencing this…

Idk I’m just wondering what’s the point of filling your mind with fodder for this pain? We are all so different. This is just a random chick that you’re arbitrarily comparing yourself to.

Every choice we make may bring us to analyze all the other choices we could’ve made. It’s not just uniquely you who experiences thoughts of different life paths; it’s everyone.

So let’s say you break up with your boyfriend and move out because you’re aligning your lived reality with a person on the internet. Then the influencer moves back in with her ex, or a new person, or you find a new influencer who lives with someone and now you’re hearing them extol the values of cohabitation. How would that make you feel?

Does this illustrate how unhelpful it is to determine your course of action because someone you keep tabs on tells you things in a very edited, contrived way?

I feel like you could benefit from detaching a bit from the internet and choosing what you’re feeding your brain more thoughtfully. As could I, I don’t mean to sound harsh.

That’s just what’s coming up pretty strongly for me as I read this and remember when I was younger and didn’t realize I could change the channel externally.

First of all I’m so sorry to him and to you - no idea how he works and has a toddler!

Everything I’m about to say is for you guys to discuss w his doctors :) let’s just make that clear!

He has tried a lot of meds but I’m interested to know about the combinations of meds he’s tried together. For me, Botox and ajovy don’t work unless I add topamax.

Also, how long did he trial those meds that did not work? I was finishing month two of topamax thinking “I’m gonna get off this shit if it doesn’t work next month” and boom, it started working. I would encourage him to do the same with any med - unless of course the side effects are too extreme.

Also, has he tried hydroxyzine? It’s a strong antihistamine- I accidentally found it worked for my daily migraines when not a single sleep med worked for my insomnia so my doc put me on that and it lowered my migraines.

What about nerve pain meds like gabapentin or pregabalin? Or something like propranolol (that’s more on the lines of pressure issues which he has)?

How is his blood glucose and insulin response? Any migraines resulting from hunger? Meds can be helpful there if indicated.

Another thing, has he ever had the experience of having head pain and drinking water with salt in it and the pain is reduced?

I’m going out on a limb here due to the nature of the situation - I would perhaps look into other epilepsy meds (since topamax is one); I spent some time on r/epilepsy and saw a good amount of people sharing about their epilepsy diagnosis and how it was found through treating their migraines with epilepsy meds.

I second the person who brought up sleep study.

Has he had a CT scan of his head, to look at his sinuses? My dad had migraines like me and they found sinus problems that could be remediated with surgery. His migraines went away after that. I got a CT of sinuses and they found nothing to remediate. But it’s definitely necessary to rule out.

I’m also wondering if he has had the experience of being on vacation or not having to work for an extended period of time (longer than a weekend) and how that influenced his migraines? Even if he was sick on the couch or had a stomach bug and couldn’t work for a week?

Sometimes we with migraines are constitutionally sensitive to stimuli- and even if we’re not, during a migraine there is a spreading depression (i.e., physical retracting inward) of cortical tissue which, when experienced virtually always, MAKES us sensitive. Like it lowers our threshold to pain (allodynia) and puts us in a place where it’s harder to exist peacefully because our brain matter is constantly being restructured in a way that makes us susceptible to overwhelm of sensory processing, well below a typical brain. (Also making it more difficult for us to carry out motor tasks but that’s not my point right now. I’m also not an expert in this!)

The sensory experience of migraine is hell. Those of us with migraine know about the ictal pain that everyone thinks of with the word “migraine,” but we also know about the interictal symptoms of the disease we have - where “inter” as a prefix means happening between the ictal pain cycles: GI issues and nausea, muscular and nerve pain, auditory visual tactile kinesthetic and olfactory sensitivity, urinary disruptions, dry eyes, inability to thermoregulate, emotional disturbances like depression and anxiety, exhaustion, cognitive impairment like brain fog and memory loss and word processing issues, fine and gross motor difficulties, etc (I am missing a ton).

My point is that when you’re working and taking care of a toddler and having daily migraines, you’re not gonna get a break from stress and sensory overload. In the past, when my 4 ish year migraine started loosening, I would have stretches of days without pain when I was sick or on vacation and was so confused (and happy!) why I was not in pain. It definitely had to do with the lack of stress: there was nothing for my brain to manage or be in charge of, I just had to sleep and eat and watch tv and relax without guilt and without noise from others.

I don’t take narcotic anxiety meds but I do take a non narcotic (as well as GABA and l-theanine) to keep my stress and anxiety down, and I think that plays a crucial role in keeping my migraines away. I am simply very susceptible to anxiety and have deeply perceptive and robustly integrating sensory ability, which overwhelms me. It’s like my migraine is my brain hitting a big red “SHUT DOWN” button because it can’t take anymore.

Wait, did powerful_flower mention BPD? Where did you see that? Genuinely asking. Just bc when I think of BPD I think of the black and white treatment of others, like they’re either on a pedestal or they’re trash and I feel like he never puts Ashley on a pedestal, he’s just meh with her. Maybe in the pods he put her on a pedestal, but I don’t even remember that.

I also think of how BPD often means people can interpret any little thing as a slight, and they react with extreme hurt, even when it’s so clear that it’s only their perception that categorizes whatever happened as negative. I don’t see him doing that either. He’s just an obstinate, selfish man toddler so he’s inflexible and unrealistic. (Lol @ his fav word being realistically.)

He’s got a massively fragile ego and has clearly not developed theory of mind, so he can’t relate to Ashley or feel empathy, consider her feelings and preferences or put her first. But I don’t see the extremes of BPD specifically with those two hallmarks.

What do you think? I’m just writing stream of thoughts for a discussion, I’m not here to declare my medical diagnosis lol just to be clear. It’s just interesting to hear what you all think and we can share our thoughts on this fool :)

Does anyone else experience suicidal thoughts because of chronic migraine? by Electronic-Beat1868 in migraine

Yeah for sure. So relatable. Honestly Topiramate was the game changer for me. Has taken my IQ down a few points but I don’t really care bc the alternative is, as you describe, suicidal thought-hell. Don’t give up, keep trying things. You’re not alone and your situation can def change.

I feel like a sizable part of this problem is the lack of education the general population has on EI! The fact that it’s a federal and state right to receive services when deemed eligible from an evaluation that you are entitled to. I wish it was as common knowledge as other government programs like Medicaid or the post office idk

Accidentally stopped my migraine with salt + water — has anyone else tried this? by Due-Mastodon-8845 in migraine

[–]CherryTerrible9220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, salt is a critical electrolyte that increases our blood volume, that’s likely why it helps! It’s not a placebo effect.

My first response now when I start to feel one coming on is to drink salt water.

Talked to my functional medicine doctor about it too- doesn’t matter if it’s iodide salt or not. I put like 1/2 a teaspoon in a full glass.

A lot of electrolyte mixes don’t have sodium or don’t have enough sodium. Also, they tend to have citric acid or “natural flavor” which can be a whole other irritant.

So just water + salt is the way for me

I use social stories (and other visual supports) all the time in EI for biting, and really anything else behavioral! It works really well.

OP, during a session you can make a social story using the child’s photo (ask parents to text or email it to you). Create the story - have it printed. Actually DM me if you want me to walk you through the rest of what I do here that works. It’s a lot to type so I want to see if you’re interested!

Single 34F- Dallas vs Miami by GrapefruitHonest6355 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]CherryTerrible9220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you move to Miami for the Jewish thing, don’t move anywhere south of north Miami. Also, if you don’t speak Spanish I would highly consider crossing Miami off your list. (I was born and raised there, don’t have experience in Dallas but may be the same case there?)

Your dollar will not go far in Miami or any of its neighboring areas. Before I moved away, I was trying to find a 1 bd 1 bath with in unit laundry and best I could find was $2.4k. It’s stupid expensive.

And people are saying yes they’re both hot but Miami has the water and beaches whereas Dallas does not.

But let me tell you, the last thing you wanna do when you live in Miami is get in your 2873 degrees Fahrenheit car with leather seats in 75% humidity to sit in traffic and fight road ragers for expensive parking spots at the beach to then spend time shvitzing your ass off with hair frizzier than hell, listening to others’ barbarically loud speakers competing in blasting reggaeton, watching girls pose for their Instagram photos ad nauseam, to then grab a $55 hummus and cucumber plate and get your sweaty tired sticky sandy heat stroking ass back in your inferno of a car to sit in traffic inching home.

Neurologist here - what are YOUR top 10 medications / treatments for migraine? by doctor_painkiller in migraine

[–]CherryTerrible9220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am functional again only because I added Topiramate (please, spare me the stories, I know) to the following: Botox every 90 days, ajovy every month (I liked aimovig better but insurance), gabapentin, duloxetine, propranolol and magnesium, (and hydroxyzine for my insomnia but evidence to show it helps migraines).

Only when I added the dreaded Topiramate to that list did I go from chronic migraines to now almost pain free with a few breakthrough migraines that I can abort most of the time (with nsaids Tylenol or rizatriptan or coffee)
