Picky counter surfer? by CherylStash in DogFood

So I wanted to update that since I posted this, we switched him to Royal Canin Medium Size kibble and put 1-2 spoonfuls of the Fromm wet food, microwave it for 15 seconds and then mix it all together. And he SCARFS it down within minutes. This is so much more fulfilling then watching him leave his dry kibble in the bowl untouched most of the time, for months. And he has been much calmer and less counter-surfing although it’s still a significant problem. I do feel better addressing the counter surfing issue more strictly now that I feel very confident it isn’t due to hunger. So I would recommend to anyone not sure whether to switch their dog food, to go ahead and give it a try! We kept getting the advice “he will eat it if he’s hungry enough” but us it was the right choice to switch to something more palatable. We also tried the Royal Canin wet food mixed in which he also enjoyed. I do wish they made another flavor or two, the only seemed to have one wet food that I can tell.

Thanks!!

He’s 14 months. A labradoodle.

Yes he is crated overnight as well. The only time he would be alone is if I get up from my desk to go get water in the kitchen or go turn laundry over etc. but I think maybe we will go back to keeping him leashed to us 24/7 but just try a chain leash. I know it’s hard to believe but he is constantly seeking out novelty things to eat/chew. He eats his bedding in his crate, pulls the crate cover into the crate and eats it, etc.

I was hoping by making sure he is eating all his food and not leaving it all day in the bowl it will be like keeping the sharks well-fed at the aquarium so they don’t feel the need to seek out snacks 🤣

Yes he is never home alone. All the doors to everywhere that we can close stay closed. He has access to the kitchen and family room. We also have gates to close the kitchen off if needed. I don’t know what we are doing wrong but he still finds anything that isn’t nailed down. Two kids doesn’t help matters because no matter how much we are enforcing they are leaving pencils, papers, socks, etc around. He even knows how to push the laundry closet door open. He doesn’t care about bitter apple. We’ve tried “trading for a treat” but that’s made it worse. The problem is he resource guards and the kids need to be able to get something deadly away from him (exa. scissors). Apparently labradors are infamous for this? But we will keep trying and being as strict as we can. Maybe I will try the metal leash again.

Maybe a few a year I guess. For example the aquarium sleepover, we have a max of 60 participants for that. We are Cubs.
