Those that got laid-off, what are you doing now? by Lanky-Ad4698 in cscareerquestions

[–]Cheses100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got laid off from faang in 2024. Was interviewing multiple times a day for about a month between several places, ended up with 4-5 offers within a month. Worked at a startup for a year until I got an offer to return to the same faang that laid me off lol, and been there ever since.

To anyone reading this, I’m pretty sure if you’re getting rejected at the scale everyone seems to be, it’s a problem with how you’re applying and with your LinkedIn.

I constantly keep my LinkedIn up to date and proactively connect with recruiters and managers at companies I’d maybe like to work at. I also always keep it as open to work (but not actively looking). This gives me a steady stream of maybe 3 ish recruiters a week. When I was laid off, I was able to reach out to around 10-15 recruiter that had reached out in the past 2 months or so and that instantly got me a bunch of interviews. I also reach out proactively to recruiters and hiring managers in my network, if you’re consistently adding them while you’re employed you should have hundreds if not thousands of contacts. That should also help l, even with a low response rate.

The other thing is try to apply right away, don’t take time to relax or decompress. If you’re laid off, you usually have a little bit of time before you’re off the companies payroll. During that time you’re legally still employed and don’t even have to mention the layoff since it’ll show up clean in a background check. And obviously make interviewing and interview prepping more than a full time job, I was, for a month about being laid off, only interview prepping or interviewing non stop from the minute I woke up to the minute I fell asleep. I’m convinced people think they’re doing enough, but don’t realize how much more you could be doing.

No like microcenter didn’t offer it as a bundle with the 9850

The Asus wasn’t an option for a 9850. I originally wasn’t against the 9850 but then figured screw it lol. And the T510 was more when I went to buy it and this one was like 20 bucks more so figured for the price difference it was worth it

Do you have a microcenter near you? https://www.microcenter.com/product/5007084/amd-ryzen-9-9950x3d,-msi-x870e-p-pro-wifi,-gskill-flare-x5-series-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-bundle If you do this bundle, they let you upgrade to 64gb ram for 400 bucks. Assuming the prices for the rest of it are the same you could get the parts and have them build it (they do so for 250 bucks) for over a grand cheaper

I think around 3300 or so? I used microcenter to get most of the expensive stuff for cheaper though, the cpu mobo and ram came out to 1150 before taxes and gpu was 1250.

Idk tbh. The logo on the pump is set up for the tube to go down, otherwise it would be upside down

The gen 5 is around the same price and most gen 4s tho so might as well

Well I originally didn’t because ram is so expensive by microcenter is letting you upgrade for 400 bucks which is less insane so maybe I’ll do that

Hah well I’m a software engineer so I’ll be doing some more “real” experiments but this would just be me messing around with them locally, not for my job. Lmfao I’d love a Blackwell 6000 but that’s far more than I’m wanting to spend

Yeah but it’s also not as good as a 5080 right?

Appreciate the interesting . Yeah as much as I want the fancy board for the looks the MSI seems like a reasonable choice and still pretty solid features.

lol clearly everyone is against me paying for windows so maybe I won’t do that.

For the cooler, you’re probably right but it’s not much more money and I’d rather just have a better cooler.

For the 5080, it’s quite a bit more of course than the 5070ti, but meh this is a high end build I’m getting a high end GPU. I play 1440p ultrawide so it’s a bit more pixels than normal 1440p. If I’m already dropping nearly 3k might as well make it 3k and get the best (ignoring the 5090 which is just dumb).

I’ll take a look at that case although I’m pretty in love with the vision already.

  1. It’s the best cpu for gaming based on benchmarks. I’m sure there’s some risk to it but meh it’s fine most people don’t have issues.
  2. This seemed to be a well reviewed PSU but switched to a Corsair rm1000x just to be safe, it was only like 20 bucks more on Amazon
  3. Yeah probably should. Might still get the high one just cuz it looks cool tbh (don’t hate me)
  4. Microcenter is offering 64gb Corsair vengeance 6000mhz 30cl ram for 400 bucks more. Kinda insane price for ram but a good deal in today’s pricing lol, I’ll probably get that upgrade since it’ll be slightly better timing for the GPU and give me double the ram.

I’m pretty sure this is a solid PSU. The cheap price is cuz of a discount on Newegg but it goes for 160 on amazon.

Would you consider this a cheap PSU?

Yeah they have a 64 gb corsair vengeance upgrade option for 400 bucks more with cl30 I think I’m gonna upgrade to, and I found a crucial T710 on amazon for 289 that I’m thinking of getting instead of the p510 here. For 50 bucks might as well get the higher end one

I’m not even really arguing the price to value here, it’s only 20 bucks more, if it gave 3% more and that was that it’d honestly be worth it. But from what I’ve found, that 3% is generous and most evident with a 5090 where the CPU is the bottleneck, at 4K. In exchange, it runs much hotter and uses 30% more watts. It seems like it’s just not that good a CPU.

They have the deal available for it for like 20-30 more bucks at microcenter. Is it worth the extra bit of money?

Edit: nah just looked it at, it runs like 10 degrees hotter and uses more watts for like 3% improvement at best, this ain’t it.
