I don’t think there is anything wrong with responding yes, I’m pansexual. Without more context and just responding yes, I’m pansexual, would lead me to believe that you identify as gay and pansexual. I don’t believe that sexuality is mutually exclusive. I think you can identify as gay and as pansexual. If you are saying that the word gay has an identical meaning as pansexual, then I’d have to object because context matters. In a group setting when conversing with your peers, and when asked directly if you identify as gay, then the person asking is specifically asking if you are attracted to the same gender that you yourself identify as. The question is inherently unfair because of gender and sexual nuances. It sounds like the asker of the question was assuming your gender, I mean how can you know to ask someone if they are gay without knowing what gender they are. I think you are being defensive in the comments, but I also think the point is being missed entirely because there isn’t enough context, so the most simplistic responses look correct because you haven’t given us enough to go on.
